The secret behind YouTube’s growth is not only that the ads themselves generate great value, but also that the value they generate increases over time at a fast rate. If its revenue was $3.5 billion in 2015, in 2016 it was estimated to be $5.9 billion, which is quite the jump. 21. @embarcstudio. [ERGEBNISSE] BEST OF THE YEAR 2019 - SUBREDDIT-EDITION!

  2. Bong Teggy vs Mikesh // DLTLLY RapBattle (MAYhem4 // München) // 2019 (16 Punkte)
  3. Sizyphos vs Davie Jones // DLTLLY RapBattle (MAYhem4 // München) // 2019 (8 Punkte)

🏆 Der Artikel des Jahres war für euch... 🏆

Was war da denn los?

  1. OG Keemo - 216 (55 Punkte): Was soll man groß dazu sagen?

  2. Tua - Tua (39 Punkte)
  3. SSIO - Messios (35 Punkte)
  4. Fatoni - Andorra (34 Punkte)
  5. Shindy - Drama (32 Punkte)

2019.08.16 18:25 c0reyann Summary of the Plagiarism Accusations

I made a comment the other day summarizing what was going on and have had a few messages from people asking me to make a new post summarizing what all the new info is from the various articles.
Side note - I have a bit of background researching copyright infringement for my blog Photo Stealers so I am kind of over the top when linking sources of original information. Apologies for all the links.
I will add to this post if/when more sources come forward.
Crime Junkie's statement is that "we recently made the decision to pull down several episodes from our main feed when their source material could no longer be found or properly cited."
Episode 25: Murdered: Amber Tuccaro // Henry McCabe. Robin Warder, host of The Trail Went Cold, told BuzzFeed and Variety that CJ used his reddit post about this case of which he posted after his podcast episode on the same, as a source for their episode. 19:25 is where he claimed in the article where the plagiarism begins but I found on my app it started at 21:38 with a few words mixed around/Brit interjections. Sources are listed for this episode currently (but the reddit post isn't listed) but on August 12 per Google Cache no sources were cited.
Episode 27: Missing: Misty Copsey. CJ removed this episode when they removed Episode 74. No one has came forward with an accusation of plagiarism. Google Cache shows no sources were cited in this episode.
Episode 33: Conspiracy: The Women of Juarez. CJ removed this episode when they removed Episode 74. Esther Ludlow, host of Once Upon a Crime, told Buzzfeed that per her own transcript of her show she found that CJ used her words almost verbatim in several instances. Google Cache shows no sources were cited in this episode.
Episode 45: Murdered: Angela Savage. CJ removed this episode when they removed Episode 74. No one has came forward with an accusation of plagiarism. Google Cache shows no sources were cited in the episode.
Episode 62: Missing: Asha Degree. Steven Pacheco, host of Trace Evidence, posted a You Tube comparing his episode on Asha Degree to CJ's. Sources are listed for this episode currently (Trace Evidence is not listed) but as recent as August 12 per Google Cache no sources were originally cited.
Episode 73: Murdered: Kirsten Hatfield. CJ removed this episode when they removed Episode 74. An old reddit post made the connection between this episode and the Investigation Discovery "On the Case with Paula Zahn" episode called Taken From Her Bed. Google Cache shows no sources were cited for this episode.
Episode 74: Murdered: Kacie Woody. CJ removed this episode after Cathy Frye came forward in Ashley Flower's Facebook comments demanding the episode be taken down for lacking to cite Cathy's award-winning article "Evil at the Door" and for plagiarizing content from the same. Google Cache shows no sources were cited for this episode. Major props to u/spoilersinabox for a transcript of the episode and for this comparison of the two (work in progress).
Episode 75: Missing: Rachel Cooke. Edward Champion, producer of The Gray Area Podcast, posted a tweet noting the plagiarism from the Charley Project starting at 12:51. Charley Project is listed as a source on the website currently, no sources were listed originally per the Wayback Machine.
Episode 76: Murdered: Jerry Michael Williams. Edward Champion, producer of The Gray Area Podcast, posted a tweet noting the plagiarism from Wikipedia starting at 12:04. Wikipedia is not listed as a source on the website currently, no sources were listed originally per Google Cache.
Episode 93: Missing: Kimberly McAndrew. Edward Champion, producer of The Gray Area Podcast, posted a series of tweets (tweet 1, tweet 2,tweet 3, tweet 4, tweet 5) showing plagiarism in the episode from the Chronicle Herald and The Coast. The Coast is credited as a source but not Chronicle Herald.
Edward has posted a spreadsheet summarizing everything on Google Docs.
Edit: Added Episode 62: Missing: Asha Degree.
Edit2: Added link to transcript of Murdered: Kacie Woody.
Edit 3: Added Episode 75, 76, 93, and side by side for Kacie Woody.

2018.05.21 08:45 Terez27 Dragon Ball Super MOVIE Megathread (see Upcoming Events)

It's time for another movie megathread! Reminder: the movie will be released on 14 December 2018 in Japan, and they're aiming for a simultaneous global release but they have not hammered out all the details and cannot guarantee that yet.

Quick Look

Character Designs
These progress from the first movie image we got on the official movie website to the latest character sheets for Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo in the July 2018 issue of V-Jump, with bonus one-off designs of Beerus, Whis, and Super Saiyan Goku and Vegeta.
Official Teaser Mirror
The teaser (which differs from a trailer in that it doesn't show actual footage from the movie) is confirmed to be animated by Ryō Ōnishi with very little in the way of correction. It was storyboarded by Tatsuya Nagamine around October 2017.

Upcoming Events

The upcoming Dragon Ball North America Tour will feature exclusive footage from the movie.
According to this, the DB North America Tour from July to October will feature "exclusive footage" from the new movie. Plus a whole bunch of figures, but we pretty much already knew that. @Herms98
The first confirmed stop is in San Diego on 19 July 2018. We can probably expect to get our first trailer around this time. See the official website for all the tour dates that have been announced so far.

Confirmed Staff

Film key staff:
Director: Tatsuya Nagamine Animation Supervisor: Naohiro Shintani Art Director: Kazuo Ogura
Other confirmed staff:
Takashi Hashimoto Naotoshi Shida Yūya Takahashi Yapiko Animation Mehdi Aouichaoui Ken Arto
A bit more detail on confirmed staff:
AnimeAjay discusses the importance of Shintani's participation here.
Ajay discusses the importance of Hashimoto's participation here.
Naotoshi Shida is excited about the new designs.
When asked his thoughts on the movie trailer: "Wonderful!! This is the one and only chance to return to square one and create a new Dragon Ball! I hope everyone supports it and looks forward to it!! @Herms98
Yūya Takahashi has also confirmed he is participating.
Yuya Takahashi: "Well done, Super!! Thank you for letting me participate! I'll do my best on the movie too!" @Herms98
Ajay discusses Takahashi's thoughts in more detail here, among other things.
Also confirmed to be participating are French studio Yapiko Animation via this stream, French animator Mehdi Aouichaoui, and French animator Ken Arto, who has animated Goku and Vegeta and claims that the intent of these designs is to get closer to the manga.

Teaser Debut Stream

There is a lot of good info in the stream where the teaser debuted; you can find a transcript of most of it on our last movie megathread. Highlights: the enemy in the teaser is probably a Saiyan, Freeza will be in the movie, and Toriyama has been working on these animation-friendly designs with staff since around February 2017. They want to release the movie simultaneously worldwide, but they're working on those details right now so they can't guarantee anything just yet.

Previous News

The movie was first announced on 16 December at the Heroes anniversary livecast ahead of Jump Festa 2017. English Toei article:
The team behind the new film will be making intensive efforts to ensure that the scale and the quality is the best of the series. Akira Toriyama, the original author of Dragon Ball, will lead the original story, screenplay, and character design.
The theme for this remarkable new film will be “Saiyan”, the strongest race in the universe. Since “Battle of the Gods”, Goku has undergone new forms from Super Saiyan God to Super Saiyan Blue to other evolved forms that have gone up against many invincible warriors from multiple universes. This new story will focus on the origin of the Saiyans’ strength and what it means to be Saiyan.
If you missed the Toriyama interview about the origin of the Saiyans, it's here. Chances are, the details in this interview will play some part in the movie. That said, it is NOT confirmed (or even suggested, really) that Yamoshi will be in the movie.
Kanzenshuu article, quoting the Herms translation of the DB Official article:
As was the case with the last movie, original author Akira Toriyama-sensei is in charge of the original work, script, and character designs, raising expectations even higher.
It looks like he’s already done more image illustrations than for any movie before, so we can’t wait for the film’s debut in December 2018!
The film's key visual was first revealed on 13 March by the DB Super official Twitter with a link to the official movie website featuring the artwork, and also some comments by Toriyama for which an English translation was provided. The translation proved to be inadequate however, and it was retranslated by Julian a.k.a. SaiyaJedi at Kanzenshuu:
COMMENTS FROM AKIRA TORIYAMA The Dragon Ball Super movie this time will be the next story in the series currently airing on TV. It will be an episode after catching our breath from the climax of the Tournament of Power with the universe’s existence on the line; with content that will give a little better understanding about Freeza and the Saiyans, which I hadn’t properly depicted up till now; and leading to a mighty foe saved for the occasion, which I think has it shaping up to be a really enjoyable story.
As with 2013’s Battle of Gods and the last outing Resurrection ‘F’, I’ve written the story myself, and I’ve had the privilege of drawing lots of design illustrations as well. The fact is, while I’m just as busy as ever, as long as I’m not doing a serial, I have plenty of free time to think about the animated version, which I was completely hands-off about before. (laughs) So please look forward to it!
Now then, the animated version on TV will be ending for the time being, but the very popular Dragon Ball Super comic drawn by Toyotaro (on sale now up through volume 5!) will keep on going as-is. I think there will also be story developments different from the TV show and the movie, so please look forward to that as well. I will be, too!
–Akira Toriyama
Stay tuned for more info!

2017.11.22 09:45 mangowhymango [Our history - Player of the week - #1+8] Iván Zamorano (148 Appearances)

Player Stats
Name Ivan Luis Zamorano Zamora
Position Striker
DoB 18/1/1967
Inter Stint 1996-2001
Appearances 148
Goals 40
Other Clubs Cobresal, Cobreandino, St. Gallen, Sevilla, Real Madrid, América, Colo Colo
BIO
Born in Santiago (Chile) Ivan Zamorano is considered one of the best Chilean football players of all time, and together with Marcelo Salas he is probably the most famous striker in the history of his country.
Ivan, who was later nicknamed Bamm-Bamm as the super strong child in The Flinstones, started his professional career in 1983 and after his early years in the Chilean League, he moved to Switzerland, scoring 34 goals in 56 matches in three seasons with St. Gallen. His performances allowed him to be selected for Sevilla, where he would play 59 matches and score 21 goals. In 1992 he was signed by Real Madrid. With the blancos, Bamm-Bamm won one league, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Supercup, plus winning the Pichichi title in 1995 with a season-total of 27 goals. In 5 seasons with Real Madrid he appeared 173 times scoring 101 goals. He then played for Inter for another 5 seasons (more on this period below). In the later years of his career Zamorano moved to Mexico, playing for both América and Colo Colo, and then decided to retire in 2003.
He played for Chile the 1998 World Cup and won a Broze Medal in the 2000 Olympic Games, for a total of 69 caps and 34 goals.
INTER
Zamorano joined Inter in 1996, during the same summer transfer window when Inter signed, among others, Youri Djorkaeff, Nwankwo Kanu and Ciriaco Sforza (allowing Roberto Carlos leave to Real Madrid though). With the nerazzuri his playing style changed and his overall score decreased, but he was always appreciated for the passion and dedication he put in every match. He played twice in a row the UEFA Cup final, winning it on the second attempt in 1998, the same year of his best result in Serie A (2nd place). In 148 matches with our colors he scored 40 goals.
During his second year with Inter he became famous for the peculiar choice of number on his jersey: when Roberto Baggio joined Inter, Ronaldo left him the number 10, receiving the number 9 from Bamm-Bamm, who decided to pick the famous 1+8 jersey.

Edition 82
Newsletter now posted to /SMBPlays.
Check back after Wednesday Podcasts for an update*
SMB Weekly will be a weekly newsletter posted sometime after Midnight EDT/EST Sunday covering things Saturday-Friday. If I miss anything in the newsletter, please post below and I'll add it in. The date format is yeamonth/day, to prevent any dispute between US and UK standards. If a video release is borderline between two days, I'm using Eastern Time, because that's my time zone. I'm trying to make the time zones more universally understandable. The newsletter will be updated sometime after Wednesday's podcast, likely before Thursday morning. Stream schedule copied as posted on beam, with both GMT and PST/PDT (note: when BST is in use, GMT will still be used for direct conversions).

2016.04.18 21:42 ASpicyStrawberry [Gr Tron] SCG Classic Tournament Report #11 (Xpost TronMTG)

Decklist: This is my first Report after the Banning of Eye of Ugin. My solution has been to add 2x Sanctum of Ugin and after this event, I highly recommend this route. 2 Sanctums is the magic number and makes the Deck feel exactly like the pre-ban. It’s fantastic! In some ways, it’s even easier than Eye because you don’t have to Pay 7 to get a threat, you just sac the Land and get it for Free. I’ll be the first to admit my opinion was wrong, but I will note that my previous posts were my thought-process before testing.
I also up’d the Ugin count to 2, Newlamog to 2, moved 2 Spellskite to the Side to bring 2 TKS to the Main, and added 1 World Breaker to the Main. I’m not sure how, but I want to get that 2nd World Breaker from the Side and put it in the Main. I’ll probably cut 1 Pyroclasm to do this. As for Kozilek’s Return, I got a Playset and I’ll be testing it out later, but I didn’t use it for the Tournament.

Round 1 vs Jacob’s Naya Burn

Jacob lives about 5 hours away in Indiana, much worse than my drive of only 2 hours. I don’t pity him in the slightest haha.
Game 1
He leads off with a Goblin Guide and starts the beats. On Turn 3, he plays an Eidolon and prompts me to Pyroclasm his field. I follow-up with Tron next turn into a TKS, taking a Searing Blaze. He had a Bolt in hand, but with the Searing Blaze, he can hit me in the face and kill my guy as well if I choose to block (Which I absolutely will). By leaving him with just Bolt, he has to choose between killing my guy or hitting me in the face, and he chooses to Bolt my TKS after blocking. Next turn, I topdeck another TKS and cast it. In response to the ETB, he fetches into a Searing Blaze and then another Bolt to my face. I’m at 2 Life and I have enough mana to also play my Wurmcoil. Now he has 0 Cards in hand and I win the game if he doesn’t draw specifically a Burn spell. Untap, Draw, Lava Spike… [G 0 – 1]
Sideboard: Out – 2x Newlamog, 3x O-Stone. In – 1x Firespout, 2x Spellskite, 2x Thragtusk. I didn’t see a Nacatl Game 1, but I saw Green mana so I assumed he had it.
Game 2
I have Turn 3 Tron while he beats me down with 2 Goblin Guides. Funny enough, I drew about 5-6 Lands off the Guide triggers. It was glorious! When I get to Turn 3, I notice he’s stuck on 1 Mana, so I play a Karn and Exile his Land. Luckily for him, he top-decks a Scalding Tarn. He has to send both Guides to kill Karn to prevent him from Exiling any other Land he would play. On my Turn, I Pyroclasm away his 2 Guides and cast a TKS. I see Searing Blaze, but don’t take it because he only has 1 Land and he can’t do a follow-up to kill TKS until 3 Mana. The others are 2 Rift Bolt, 1 Lightning Bolt, and 1 Swiftspear. The Rifts are delayed damage and the Swiftspear is walled by TKS, so the best choice was taking Lightning Bolt. Next turn he throws out a Lava Spike while I cast a Thragtusk and go back to 11 Life. With a Wurmcoil coming next turn, I’ve stabilized too much and he scoops. [G 1 – 1]
Game 3
I have Turn 3 Tron with a Karn, Wurmcoil, and a Thragtusk, but I’m going 2nd. He leads off with a Wild Nacatl and starts Burning me. By Turn 2, he’s swinging with a Swiftspear and is hitting all his Land Drops with enough action to keep up the Burn curve. I hit Turn 3 and land a Wurmcoil, but I’m at 5 Life with him having 3 Cards in Hand. He casually untaps, draws, then Bolt + Bolt. I die oh so casually. [G 1 – 2]
Score: 0 – 1

Round 2 vs Jacob’s Bogles

I don’t know what it is about Bogle players, but they always seem to be new haha. Despite that, he was very friendly and we joked about our awesome Playmats (We got a sick Ghost Quarter Playmat for entering).
Game 1
The first match went as expected for me. I got a Turn 4 Ugin, stabilized on 5 Life, and locked him out of the Game. [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: Out – 2x Newlamog, 2x TKS, 1x Sylvan Scrying. In – 2x Spellskite, 2x Thragtusk, 1x World Breaker.
Game 2
He leads with a Bogle suited up with a Rancor. Luckily for me, he’s still in Pyroclasm range and I remove his Bogle on Turn 2 while still at 17 Life. Next turn, he only plays a Spiritdancer and passes back. I’m feeling confident about this match now as I go for a Turn 4 delayed Tron (I find Tron Turn 4, so I only have 5 mana to spend when it comes online). I know that Spiritdancer can get out of hand, but my next turn Ugin can take care of any damage it does. I drop an O-Stone and pass the turn. On his turn he goes ham! Rancor, Daybreak Coronet, Ethereal Armor, and Ethereal Armor! All combined with the power of friendship to create an unstoppable 21/21 Megazord! He basically 1-shots me. And sparks fly out and whatnot as I fall over in defeat, confused as to why my plan failed again. [G 1 – 1]
Game 3
I mull to 5 this game as the first 2 hands were dependent on draws, or they were going to do nothing. I keep Karn, Power Plant, Tower, Tower, Pyroclasm. I Scry an Egg to the top and play the Power Plant for Turn 1. He plays a Glade Scout and passes. I prepare for Pyroclasm by playing the Egg and pass. I hope and pray that he’ll still have 2 Toughness like Game 2 and I can Pyroclasm to buy more time. He plays Rancor (Yes!), then Ethereal Armor (NoooO!). He hits me with his 5/3 and passes back. I can’t Pyroclasm anymore and I don’t find Tron after that. I thought that maybe Firespout would be a good choice to side-in, but he’ll probably be much higher than a 5/3 by Turn 3 anyway. However, in Game 2 it showed me how important Pyroclasm was over Kozilek's Return. If I had waited to Turn 3, the Bogle would be out of Pyroclasm range. [G 1 – 2]
Score: 0 – 2
The day isn’t starting off well, but I tell myself that I won’t drop unless I hit 4 losses. There’s still hope for 7-2 :D

Round 3 vs Colt’s Jund

Colt is one of the lucky ones. He lives 15 minutes from here and casually woke up right before the Tournament started. Next to us I heard of two people, one from Florida and one from Georgia driving like 12 hours away to come here. I don’t know that I’d ever travel that far to come to a Modern Tournament haha.
Game 1
He starts off with a Grim Lavamancer into Dark Confidant. I get Pyroclasm on both of them and finish a Turn 4 Tron. Ugin comes down and can’t be answered. [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: Out – 2x TKS, 2x Sylvan Scrying. In – 2x Warping Wail, 2x Thragtusk. I keep blanking every time I face Jund. They play Fulminator Mage. FULMINATOR MAGE!! Not Crumble to Dust. Warping Wail Exiles Confidant and that’s it. I should’ve sided in 2x Pithing Needle for Fulminator and Liliana instead. I also remove TKS’s when they can’t wall anything. There’s nothing that sucks more than blocking a 4/5 Tarmogoyf and giving them a Card.
Game 2
Colt lands a Fulminator and destroys my Tower as I get a delayed Turn 3 Tron. He follows-up with a Liliana and I get kinda nervous. The worst thing that can happen is when they keep you off Tron and they Ultimate Liliana to wreck your manabase. However, I believe Colt was newer to the Game as he ticks up to 5 once, then doesn’t tick up anymore. I believe he didn’t want to discard any of his Cards, but especially in Jund vs Tron, you need to play to Win! I draw into a Map and search up Tower again. Next Turn I’m able to land an Ugin to wipe his board and secure the game. [G 2 – 0]
Score: 1 – 2. Yes! Give us more Jund! All the Jund players should get paired against us!

Round 4 vs Jacob’s Abzan Company

3 out of 4 Rounds, I’ve fought a person named Jacob. The day only gets weirder as we continue onward.
Game 1
I end up mulling to 4 because my first 3 Hands didn’t have any Land. Sucks for sure. However, I end up getting a Turn 4 Tron (Sick!) and I land a Wurmcoil. He walls the Wurmcoil with a Kitchen Finks that can’t die due to Melira. Jacob combos to Infinite Life and I’m unable to change the boardstate. So he Scrys 10 Times, finds Chord of Calling, then Chords for Redcap and kills me. [G 0 – 1]
Sideboard: Out – 2x TKS, 2x Sylvan Scrying. In – 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Torpor Orb. I feel I definitely want to remove TKS when I bring in Torpor Orb. Every other Creature in the Deck is On-Cast so TKS is the only one affected.
Game 2
I get Turn 3 Tron and attempt to Exile a Kitchen Finks with Karn. He makes a really nice play: Chord of Calling for Viscera Seer and sacrificing the Finks in response. Now I’m sitting with a Karn at 3 that’s easily killed next turn. On Turn 4, I choose to not play another Karn because he has a Spellskite and I don’t want him to redirect it. Instead, I just O-Stone and blow it up on his Turn. He sacrifices 6 Creatures to Seer and Scrys 5 times, filtering out all the Lands. Turn 5, I follow-up with Newlamog and Exile 2 of his 3 Lands, leaving him with only a Temple Garden. I get a single attack in to shred 20 Cards down, while following up with a Wurmcoil. Next turn when I go to attack, he Chords for a Fiend Hunter to Exile Newlamog. I play another Karn, sacrifice a Sanctum to go get my 2nd Newlamog, then Exile the Fiend Hunter to return my original Newlamog. With only 23 Cards left in his Deck and a 2nd Newlamog for insurance, he’s forced to scoop. [G 1 – 1]
Game 3
He leads off with a Bird and an Anafenza. On Turn 3, with his Bird and solid Land Drops, he tosses out a Memoricide naming Karn Liberated. Luckily for me, my hand consisted of Turn 3 Tron with a Newlamog and Wurmcoil instead. After my Wurmcoil comes down, I get a Turn 4 Natural Newlamog and Exile Anafenza and his only Black source. Turn 5 I Pyroclasm away his Bird and follow-up with a Torpor Orb, but at this point he knows he can’t fend off such a fast Newlamog and concedes. [G 2 – 1]
Score: 2 – 2. Hey we made it back to even!

Round 5 vs Eric’s Abzan Company

It took me awhile to remember this guy’s name. Probably because he was one of the few that didn’t have any interest in talking to me. I remember him because he wore 2 distinct Gold Chain Necklaces.
Game 1
Eric gets out 2 Kitchen Finks and Melira with a Bird. I Pyroclasm away what I can, and he goes for a CoCo to put more on the board. I get a Turn 5 Ugin and I wipe the board and keep it clear. Wurmcoil Engine seals the game when he can’t play anymore Creatures. [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: Out – 2x TKS, 2x Sylvan Scrying, 1x Chromatic Sphere. In – 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Torpor Orb, 1x World Breaker. I considered that this match can be a little grindy, so I decided to try out World Breaker. In the end though, World Breaker was just another random threat and I would’ve only brought him in vs Archangel of Thune if I saw one.
Game 2
Eric Ramps really fast with a Wall of Roots and a Bird. He gets 2 of the combo pieces, but I get to Pyroclasm a lot of them away, including the Wall that was a 0/2 at this point. However, he uses CoCo to find the other 2 pieces again and combos off. He gains 20 Billion Life and kills me off a Chord into Redcap. Some games you just don’t get going enough. [G 1 – 1]
Game 3
I have a perfect Turn 3 Tron hand with a Torpor Orb. I decide it’s a better idea to delay Tron in order to hate him out, so I skip a Turn 2 Map sacrifice to play Torpor Orb. It’s important to note that his Finks can still Persist through Pyroclasm and O-Stone, they just can’t gain Life which isn’t relevant anyway. Torpor Orb stops his E-Wits, Anafenza Bolsters, Redcap, and his Fiend Hunters so he can’t combo off or really interact with me at all. On Turn 4, I play a Sanctum as my 4th Land and drop a Pithing Needle naming Viscera Seer. Now he can’t Scry in response to a Board-wipe and he has 2 pieces holding him back. I drop a Karn, sacrifice Sanctum to find Newlamog, then Exile a Finks. Next turn, Newlamog comes down to Exile another Finks and a Land and he scoops it up before I get to attack. [G 2 – 1]
Score: 3 – 2. Comeback Time!

Round 6 vs Derek’s Abzan Company

The 3rd Abzan Company in a row. After a long post-game chat with Jacob (The Abzan Company Jacob lol), I know that most lists don’t run Fulminators or Path to Exile. Jacob said it’s such a good matchup for me because they literally can’t interact with me. With that advice in mind, a 3rd Abzan Company match is something I’m looking forward to. Derek accidentally drops a Viscera Seer when shuffling his Deck and says “Welp, the jig is up!”
Game 1
I Land Turn 3 Tron into a Karn to Exile his Anafenza. My follow-up is a Natural Turn 4 Newlamog to Exile a Kitchen Finks and his only Black Source Land. This causes him to scoop up his Cards and move to sideboard. [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: Out – 2x TKS, 2x Sylvan Scrying. In – 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Torpor Orb. I left World Breaker out this time since I didn’t expect Archangel of Thune. I didn’t last time either, but I was just trying him out.
Game 2
An important note here: I noticed that Derek was shuffling my Deck very forcefully when he would cut the Deck. So forceful that the Cards against each other were making sounds they don’t usually make, like cracking plastic almost. As he was shuffling his own Deck for Game 2, I held onto mine until he was done. When he presented, I asked him if he could be more gentle with my Cards. He was polite enough to agree and I let him know that I appreciated it. I ended up finding out later that he did bend one of my sleeves on the corner, so that easily could’ve been called out for a Marked Card. I’m glad nobody ever caught it as I didn’t have extras on me.
Onto the Game! I keep a hand with Pyroclasm as Derek plays out a Forest into a Bird. Next turn he plays 2 more Birds and no Land. Instead of going for Tron, I decide to punish him and put him back to 1 Mana from 4 by casting Pyroclasm. He finds another land and casts Anafenza. He’s moving really fast at this point and I can tell he’s irritated. On Turn 4, he casts a Viscera Seer and a Bird, immediately going to Combat for 2 dmg and passes the Turn. He does his whole turn in about 3 seconds and tries to go back for his Anafenza Bolsters after attempting to pass to me. It’s only been a split moment, but he’s moving so fast that he’s shortcutted 4 phases past the Trigger and I don’t allow him to have it. He angrily scoops his dice to the side as we go to my turn. I Pyroclasm once more to wipe his board, then Land a Karn into a Newlamog from a Sanctum trigger the next turn. As soon as I show him Newlamog from the search, he scoops up his Cards, signs the slip, and walks away. [G 2 – 0]
Score: 4 - 2

Round 7 vs Jacob’s Naya Company

I could tell Jacob was scary good at his Deck by the way he sequenced so tightly. I’m not sure I could’ve won this even without mistakes.
Game 1
I keep a hand with 2 Tron Lands, but the only search is a single Egg. It’s very draw dependent but the 2 Tron Lands were too enticing to pass up. Jacob goes straight from a Turn 1 Hierarch into a Turn 2 Loxodon Smiter. He doesn’t play anything else and just beats me down over 4 Turns. As predicted, I got my 2 Tron Lands out and did nothing. I decided to use the Egg to dig deeper, but got punished the immediate turn after when I drew Ancient Stirrings and had no Green mana. I should’ve mulligan’d. [G 0 – 1]
Sideboard: Out – 2x Newlamog, 2x TKS. In – 2x Thragtusk, 2x Warping Wail. Here I thought that he might be running Crumble to Dust, because for some reason I think everyone is running Crumble to Dust. The difference between siding Pithing Needle and Crucible of Worlds is that Crucible is really safe against most forms of Land Destruction. But for Pithing Needle to work, I need to actually think they have Fulminators or Ghost Quarters, sometimes without seeing them. Regardless, I should’ve sided in Pithing Needles instead of Warping Wails.
Game 2
He starts with a Turn 1 Hierarch and I don’t want to fall like last game, so I Pyroclasm the Bird. I’m not sure if that was the right move as he follows up with a Voice of Resurgence. On Turn 3, he plays a Knight of the Reliquary that’s already a 4/4. I get to Turn 4 Tron, but it’s delayed so I can’t play anything. On his Turn, he only swings with Voice and I’m slightly confused. His Lands are also Forest, Plains, Plains and I’m worried about Blood Moon but he never plays it. Instead, he uses his Knight to sac a Sacred Foundry he just fetched up and goes to find a Ghost Quarter, popping my Tower. After that, I’m unable to find Tron and I’m forced to concede. It was insane to me how he had 4 Lands: Plains, Plains, Forest, Sacred Foundry, and then held back Knight to Ghost Quarter me for safety. He probably had Blood Moon in hand but wasn't playing it so he could use his Fetch Lands to beef up his Knight. [G 0 – 2]
Score: 4 – 3
A Moment to Reflect: After playing 2 Games of doing absolutely nothing and feeling like my Deck just didn’t work at all, I got really depressed. Usually at this point, I can ruin my own day despite something as good as a 4 win comeback. However, I decided to not let it end that way and tried out some personal-therapy. With 30 minutes left on the Clock, I walked outside into the Columbus air and felt the heat of the sun. It felt fantastic. I walked by myself and explored a little, just focusing on taking in the city and relaxing. I found a bench somewhere and sat down to relax and listened to the sounds around me. I did this for 20 minutes before returning back inside, after someone decided to sit right behind me and start smoking a blunt…

Round 8 vs Zane’s Jund

I noticed that people get less talkative as the day goes on. Most people are tired and don’t really care to interact with you. We talked for a moment about our Playmats but nothing else was said.
Game 1
Zane lands a Turn 2 Confidant into Turn 3 Liliana. I land a Turn 4 Karn with a Sanctum trigger that finds a Newlamog. I Exile Liliana as he Bolts Karn on the End Step. He follows with 2 Kitchen Finks and a tapped Raging Ravine while I play a Wurmcoil. He then drops a Kalitas and I attack in with my Wurmcoil. He double-blocks my Wurmcoil with the 2 Finks and I’m surprised when he says I don’t get any Tokens. Kalitas causes him to be Exiled and he gets a Zombie, so no Tokens for me. It actually worked out as I play an Ugin on my Turn, purposely wasting a Mana by tapping for 9 so I can keep up my Ghost Quarter. I use ‘-4’ and wipe his board. He goes for the Raging Ravine activation on his Turn and I get to Ghost Quarter it to protect Ugin. He scoops it up as we go to sideboard. [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: Out – 2x TKS, 2x Sylvan Scrying. In – 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Thragtusk. I learn from my mistakes! Woo!
Game 2
Zane gets a Turn 2 Confidant into a Turn 3 Liliana once again. I have 3 Karns in my Hand, so I discard one to Liliana. I get Turn 3 Tron and play a Wurmcoil. I purposely delay my Karn to Turn 4 because I have a Sanctum in hand and I want to use it. He plays a Turn 4 Kalitas again and ticks down on Liliana to edict my Wurmcoil. (That’s such a cool synergy!) No Tokens, swing with Confidant and pass back. I drop my Sanctum, play Karn and trigger the Sanctum. As soon as he sees the revealed Newlamog, he signs the match slip and scoops up his Cards without another word. [G 2 – 0]
Score: 5 – 3
A lot of people had FeelsBadMan for me today. Considering 8 out of the 9 Decks I fought could be obliterated with Ugin and couldn’t answer Newlamog, I can understand why. But of course, that’s not going to stop me from doing it haha. I imagine a lot of people were worn out too. It's definitely hard to stay positive and upbeat through 9 Hours of Magic.

Round 9 vs Steven’s Abzan Company

Here we go, the final round and the Magic gods have blessed me with a 4th Abzan Company opponent! To sum it up for the day, I fought: 1 Burn, 1 Naya Company, 1 Bogles, 4 Abzan Company, and 2 Jund. I’m not going to complain that all my wins were against my favored matchups haha.
Game 1
He wins the roll and leads off with a Birdle and Anafenza. I have a Turn 3 Tron hand with Map and I drop a TKS off my Tron alongside an O-Stone. I see 2 CoCo’s, a Chord, Finks, and Wall of Roots. I Exile the Chord as I feel the CoCo’s will be random whereas the Chord can be used to get the 3rd and final combo piece. I do some Math and see that I can blow up the O-Stone on my turn and still have enough for Wurmcoil followup. So I put a Fate Counter on TKS on his End Step, wipe the field with O-Stone on my turn, then follow-up with a Wurmcoil. He uses his 2nd CoCo to get a bit of a boardstate back, but Karn Exiles another Finks and he can’t block my Creatures anymore. Wurmcoil takes him down! [G 1 – 0]
Sideboard: You know the drill by now haha. Out – 2x Sylvan Scrying, 2x TKS. In – 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Torpor Orb.
Game 2
I have a perfect hand of Turn 3 Tron + Wurmcoil, Karn, and World Breaker. However, it’s not meant to be. He has a Turn 1 Bird ramped into a Turn 2 Fulminator Mage. He destroys my Land and puts me back to 0. I play the 2nd Tron Land and pass, still sitting on my Map. He plays another Fulminator Mage, blows up my Land again and puts me back to zero Lands again. This would be really bad if not for topdecking 2 more Lands, but they’re a Ghost Quarter and a Sanctum. I get to 3 Lands and play an O-Stone. He’s building up a bit of a scary board with 2 Kitchen Finks beating me in every turn. I get the 4th Land and it’s a Power Plant. I decide that I absolutely need to wipe with O-Stone, so I can't sit on my Map waiting for the 2nd Tron piece. The Map would die anyway I suppose, so might as well use it. I fetch for a Mine on his EOT when I’m at 3 Life. I draw Tower, the final piece, and I play the Mine. So I’m sitting on 5 Lands, 2 Tron pieces with the 3rd in hand, and I pass back to him. I don’t have a choice in the matter, I need to blow up the O-Stone when he attacks. He does have (BB) so I’m worried if he has Redcap. If he does, he’ll play it and I'll take 2 dmg to the face. Then when O-Stone goes off, he’ll Persist and I'll take 1 dmg to the face and die. He ends up playing nothing, going straight to combat. I Declare Blockers with my O-Stone, it’s super effective and wipes all but the 2 Persisting Finks. 2nd Main, he plays the Murderous Redcap and puts me to 1 Life. He had Lethal, and he missed it. I plan to follow-up with Wurmcoil on my turn as I’ll be able to block a Finks, lose 4 and gain 6 and hopefully stabilize. I untap, draw, and it’s Ugin the Motherfucking Spirit Dragon! I immediately ‘-4’ and wipe his board, preventing his Redcap from Persisting and Exiling his only source of Burn. From here, he can’t stop my following Wurmcoil and current Ugin from ending the game. [G 2 – 0]
Score: 6 – 3 !! I’m extremely proud of this for my first ever Classic!

Conclusion

It was such an amazing experience! I loved every bit of it and I wasn’t nearly as tired as I thought I was going to be. My Wife says that my Stay-At-Home-Dad Life allows me to go into Power-Save Mode near the end haha. Speaking of Stay-At-Home-Dads, check out this Man I got a Picture With :D Thanks again for the Pic and the Memories Jeff Hoogland!
Deck Changes: I already listed a change I wanted to try in the Intro, but I also want to change the Sideboard. I’m going to try removing 2 Warping Wail, 1 World Breaker, and 1 Emrakul for 4 Leyline of Sanctity to help my Burn matchup. I’ve also never used Crumble to Dust, so I may replace that for something. I’m not sure what though.
Thanks for the Read! I appreciate all the support! Especially after this 9 Rounds of Memory over here haha.

2016.04.18 20:28 ASpicyStrawberry [Gr Tron] SCG Classic Tournament Report #11

2013.07.05 16:14 fussbudgets 132+ Teams in 132+ Days: North Texas Mean Green

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS
Conference USA
Year Founded: 1890
Location: Denton, TX
Total Attendance: 36,000 (approx. 29,000 Undergraduate and 7,000 Graduate students)
Mascot: Son of Worm, lineage: The Flying Worm
The Mean Green
So wait, UNT is obviously the Eagles! Where the hell did Mean Green come from?? Well, we were commonly known as the Eagles until the late Sixties where there are two supposed theories for the switch. One being that some basketball players started the term as a call and response cheer after being dissatisfied with previous chants: Ira Daniels would yell, "Mean Green, you look so good to me," and we'd say, "Mean Green." The other, more popularized version involves the wife of the sports information director at the time yelling, "That's the way, Mean Greene!" in regards to a spectacular tackle by the legendary Joe Greene (see below). She thought it would apply well to the defensive unit as a whole, and thus local sports write-ups took it from there and next year Mean Green memorabilia started populating bookstore shelves. Then! Joe Greene wound up being one of the most prolific defensive tackles ever to play in the NFL, where the moniker of Mean Joe Greene soon became synonymous with his alma mater. Thus, some people like to think that UNT took on the name after Joe's success, but the actual timelines prove to be a little less vicarious than that. Our teams are not the only ones who have gone through name changes as well.
Additionally, there are a couple of families of elusive albino squirrel on campus that serve as unofficial academic mascots. At one point however, it was thought they had died out. I have seen a couple in the last few years though.
Live Mascot: Scrappy the Eagle and his parentage, the absolutely terrifying Eppy. Scrappy in action. Scrappy gets all the ladies.
Cheerleaders: 1 2
Dance Team: 1 2 3 4 It's common knowledge that our dancers tend to fare pretty well when it comes time for Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders tryouts.
Marching Band: The Green Brigade
The Green Brigade is comprised of 350 music and non-music majors from all disciplines across the university. Hailing from the College of Music, which is the largest accredited US music school by enrollment (more on that later), the GB plays with an incredible amount of musicianship. A good portion of the marchers and directors spend their eligible summers populating the Drum Corps International circuit. Bleacher Report recently named both the GB and our drumline as the best in the nation, and....no, you know what? I can't. I can't accept praise from BR. Anyway. Popular tunes from the stands include "Fly Like an Eagle" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" after games. It's always popular for the drumline to do their own thing after halftime performances while the band is shuffling back into the stands. Also, this. And for unrelated giggles, how about a coffee break?
Fight Song
Let's give a cheer for U of NT;
Cheer for the Green and White.
Victory's in store whatever the score,
Our team will ever fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Shoulder to shoulder we march along,
Striving for victory.
Playing the game for the honor and fame,
And the glory of UNT.
U ... N ... T ... Eagles! (CAW!)
UNT Eagles Fight, Fight, Fight!
Stadium: Apogee Stadium, Glamour Shot 1 2
Capacity: 30,850
The $78M Apogee opened in 2011 as the first ever LEED Platinum certified stadium in US collegiate athletics. It was the first stadium project for HKS Architects and Manhattan Construction post-Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, and we all think they did a damn fine job. Its naming rights were scooped up by Apogee ResNet, the Austin-based internet service provider for ours and many other universities' dorms. Though we like the name for an athletic venue, given Apogee's poor level of internet service, the naming comes as a little bit of a farce. Apogee has gone over incredibly well in reviews from the college football world, receiving admiration recently from both Alabama and Vanderbilt staff and coaches. Ex Dallas Cowboys Super Scout Gil Brandt after touring Apogee Stadium called UNT's football palace "a Taj Mahal of a college football stadium." The venue is powered by three wind turbines as well as the Denton grid. With Denton being the largest per-capita consumer of green energy in the country at 40% from the Muenster Wolf Ridge wind farm and other smaller ventures, that makes Apogee one mean green facility.
Stadium Location: On-Campus, in the Mean Green Athletic Village - modeled after Olympic villages where athletes' dorms, training, and fields of competition are all in one place.
Conference Champions (25): Lonestar ('32,'35,'36,'39,'40,'41,'46,'47), Gulf Coast ('50,'51,'52,'55,'56), Missouri Valley ('58,'59,'66,'67,'71,'73), Southland ('83,'94), Sun Belt ('01,'02,'03,'04), CUSA (impending)
Number of Bowl Games: 2 Wins (1 non-FBS), 7 Total
National Titles: Aha.Ha.
Rivals
  • SMU The Safeway Bowl So this is one that folks on the Pony side of the DFW metroplex try to ignore, but one that we simply cannot let go. The two schools have played since 1922 and it has been a completely one-sided affair. Mean Green Dentonites have consistently felt snubbed by the richer classes of Highland Park, and that resentment spills over into all sorts of outlets, but none more so than athletics. In 1994, after failing to reestablish the football matchup in two years, UNT head coach Matt Simon had this to say, "I'd like to play because I think we could beat them, and my players feel the same way. If they'd like to play on a Safeway parking lot ... just give us a date and time." Thus, the unofficial colloquial title. Though there's no physical trophy, there have been plenty of visceral actions from this rivalry; they've painted our administration building doors, we've stolen their head coach, etc. Thankfully, our ADs have come to some sort of terms and locked in a renewal to the bout for 11 straight years starting in 2014. SMU leads the series 28-4-1.
  • Middle Tennessee State UNT leads 7-5.
  • Western Kentucky UNT leads 4-2.
These two have evolved naturally from our Sun Belt match ups and are honestly the only two teams from the Belt that we're glad are following us. The games get really intense amongst all our sports, but more so in basketball. I like to think of these games in their sum total as the "RGB games".
2012 Season
Record: 4-8
Coach: Dan McCarney
2012 Roster
Key Players:
  • Zach Orr, MLB - Orr continued his second straight year of leading the Mean Green defense, in both tackles at 108 and making second-team All-Sun Belt. The 2013 season will mark the third straight year that Orr is Defensive Captain as a Senior.
  • Jeremy Brown, Brandon Byrd, Antoinne Jimmerson, RBs - After Dallas Cowboy and multiple record-breaking all-star RB Lance Dunbar matriculated in 2012, the Mean Green were left without a consensus starter - because all three of these beasts were so good! Hence, our Cerberus-style run game became one of the most exciting aspects of play last year: Byrd the steady bruiser, Brown the do-it-all, and Jimmerson the elusive spinster. Each made major contributions and went for 500+ yards. If you're savvy however, you'd realize that this is a really run-heavy attack in a supposedly Spread offense. And while the 3-in-1 RBs were exciting, they were also poised into some really frustrating and predictable play-calling due to the erratic behavior of...
  • ...Derek Thompson, QB - I think we can all admit that most offenses live and die on the level of quarterback play, and ours most certainly died a little inside. Thompson, the second year starter, went into 2012 looking vastly improved but still not exactly accurate. Once play began, however, Mean Green fans were never sure which DT would show up that day. What was most baffling was that against the top rated competition, namely Kansas State and LSU, he really showed up, his handling of the offense was fantastic, and he really seemed to have a grasp on things - but then against middling and low-level Sun Belt conference foes, he evaporated into an over-throwing, mistake-prone nightmare. We literally could have won out the year on a high note leading against Western Kentucky, when a few interceptions brought McCarney and Offensive Coordinator Mike Canales to halt all pass plays and eventually bring our season to a begrudging end. There's some light at the end of the tunnel for 2013, however...
Biggest Plays:
[side note on K-State game]: This loss was probably one of Mean Green fans' bright spots for the year as we baffled coaches and commentators alike and remained incredibly competitive for 3 quarters+. Ultimately though, a slew of highly questionable and homer calls and non-calls really drove us back in this one. Nonetheless, UNT generally has an amiable affinity for K-State and we all really hoped they would win it all last year.
2013 Season
2013 Schedule
Aug. 31 vs Idaho - this will be the first season that's started with a UNT home game in like a decade+, I believe.
Sept. 7 at Ohio
Sept. 14 vs Ball State
Sept. 21 at Georgia - annual prostitution game. Maybe this time we'll pull an AppState? Yeah, right.
Sept. 28 Bye
Oct. 5 at Tulane* - first game of Conference USA play! USA! USA! USA!
Oct. 12 vs Middle Tennessee* - or MUTS, as we call 'em.
Oct. 19 at Louisiana Tech*
Oct. 26 at Southern Miss*
Oct. 31 vs Rice* - Thursday on Halloween! My god, I hope they bring The MOB with them!
Nov. 9 vs UTEP*
Nov. 16 Bye
Nov. 23 vs UTSA*
Nov. 30 at Tulsa*
2013 Roster
The Greats
Greatest Games:
  • 1957, 35-14 W over highly favored Navarro College - This was UNT's Jackie Robinson story, where Abner Haynes went off for four TDs in the second half for a come-from-behind victory in the face of a litany of racial epithets hurled his way.
  • 2001, 24-21 W over Middle Tennessee - This was the first turning point for the Mean Green in its Sun Belt years. UNT (0-5 on the season) came out of nowhere to defeat the Blue Raiders and began a nearly undefeated conference record for the next four years, garnering as many Championships.
  • 2002, 24-19 New Orleans Bowl W over Cincinnati - This is UNT's only FBS era bowl win.
  • Additionally, we have a few really surprising underdog wins in our history over teams like Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Florida.
Greatest Players:
  • Ray Renfro, WRB (1951-1952) - Had a storied twelve year career for the Cleveland Browns winning two championships in the pre-Super Bowl days, following an All-American period with NTSU.
  • Abner Haynes, RB (1956-1960) - The first African-American player in Texas college football (along with Leon King), Haynes, a Denton native, led one of the greatest comebacks in North Texas history (see Greatest Games) and 3 conference championships in his 4 years. He then went on to win the AFL's first ever Player of the Year award as a member of the Dallas Texans (now the Kansas City Chiefs). He still holds a number of rushing records for the Chiefs franchise.
  • "Mean" Joe Greene, DT(LB) (1966-68) - By far UNT's most outstanding and recognizable player and to some, the namesake of our teams (see above). 1968 Consensus All-American, of the 1984 College Football Hall of Fame class, Greene led a defensive unit that allowed only 2-yards per carry average across 29 games, leading the Eagles to a record of 23-5-1. Selected fourth overall in the 1969 draft to the Pittsburg Steelers, Greene quickly became the franchise player for one of the era's most dominant NFL teams. Anchoring the veracious "Steel Curtain", Greene racked up more awards than is worth typing in this already lengthy post. After retiring, Greene became an assistant coach for the Steelers and a few other teams for 16 years and in 2004 became the Special Assistant for Player Personnel for the Steelers from which he has just officially retired in 2013. He retires with six Super Bowl rings across both his playing career and professional career. He resides nearby to Denton in Flower Mound, TX and occasionally will participate in UNT marketing activities, though it's rumored that he would really like the attention to go elsewhere. Thanks, Mean Joe!
  • Patrick Cobbs, RB (2001-2005) - One of the heroes of the North Texas glory years, Cobbs played as a backup his first two years before taking the starting job in 2003, when he led the country in rushing yards and points per game. He eclipsed basically every record at North Texas, and held them all until...
  • Lance Dunbar, RB, 2009-2012. The bright spot in the past few years, Dunbar beat Cobbs's records across the board, and finished 6th in the nation in rushing in his Senior season. Despite going undrafted, he played his way onto the Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster in 2012.
Greatest Coaches:
  • Odus Mitchell (1946-1966) - Winningest UNT coach ever at 122-85-9. in his first season, NTSU won its first bowl game at the Optimist Bowl (non-FBS). His teams won 10 conference championships across three different conferences, and had one streak of 7 winning seasons, which remains a school record. In his final year of coaching, an 8-2 Eagle squad would help earn him National Coach of the Year honors.
  • Hayden Fry (1973-1978) - Weren't expecting that one were you? After SMU and before his legendary stint at Iowa, Fry was both the head football coach and athletic director in an incredibly uncertain time for North Texas Athletics, when dropping Division 1 football was a serious prospect. Fry resurrected the team and fan base, compiling a 40-23-2 record over six seasons. At this time, he even got to coach three of his sons. He never took a team to a bowl game, but it has been noted that if there were the same number and eligibility of bowl games then as there are now, 5/6 of his teams would have gone on to post-season play.
  • Darrell Dickey (1998-2006) - Dickey is one of the more popular, but dividing figures in recent UNT memory. He lead the Mean Green to their only winning seasons in the Sun Belt, where they dominated the conference between 2001 and 2004, winning four straight championships. These seasons led to four straight New Orleans bowl berths as well with a stunning 2002 victory over Cincinnati. Alas, Dickey's success did not last and years of recruiting reliance on JUCO transfers left the Mean Green scraping the barrel. The massive falling out and spurning Dickey received leading to his early departure in 2006 is detailed here. This article also lends itself as reasoning for why Mean Green fans absolutely loathe the possibility of black uniforms. Just, bad blood all around. Dickey, like other recent UNT coaches had bouts with bad health. He had a heart attack 2 months before being fired, and possibly had his gall bladder removed and found out he was diabetic prior to his final season. Unfortunately, Dickey's departure brought on the incredibly hyped-up but equally incredibly doomed/flawed/failed hiring of national high school stand-out coach, Todd Dodge.
  • Dan McCarney? - So, here's to hoping! UNT has a special love for McCarney for three things: he belongs to the epic coaching tree under Hayden Fry, he's made a success story out of a similarly situated Iowa State between 1995 and 2006, and the dude's won a National Championship with Florida. Also, this badassery. Due to excessive sun exposure (seriously) while at Florida, McCarney went legally blind in one eye briefly after being hired at UNT. So, he got it replaced with a glass one. Bad. Ass. He's still sensitive to light though, so he wears athletic and designer sun glasses at nearly. all. times. This has led to some epic interpretations of Coach Mac's greatness such as this and my own take. Beyond the eye issues, McCarney also had a stroke last year (to which he replied, "It wasn't anything a little Grey Goose couldn't fix!") and bypass heart surgery before Spring drills this year (to which he returned on the job within the week!)!! The guy's a tank. Here's to year 3 of the McCarney era!
Current NFL Players
  • Patrick Cobbs, RB, New Orleans Saints
  • Lance Dunbar, RB, Dallas Cowboys
  • Jamize Olawale, RB, Oakland Raiders
  • Craig Robertson, LB, Cleveland Browns
  • Brian Waters, G, New England Patriots
Traditions
  • Spiriki - Spiriki was donated by a group of super alumni as Apogee opened. The bronze imposing eagle bust stands just over 4' tall and is patted upon players' entrance onto the field for luck.
  • The Talons - the super crew when it comes to Mean Green fandom. These radicals get all suited up and lead various aspects of UNT traditions such as:
    • Boomer the Canon* - a muzzle loading Civil War-era canon fired off to signal UNT touchdowns, kick-off, half-time, and the end of home football games as well as special occasions such as University Day.
    • Mean Green Machine* - A 1929 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan that used be driven around the track when we played at Fouts Field. It recently fell to disrepair (again), and rather than keep fixing a flawed engine, the Engineering Department took it under its wing and converted it into an all-electric vehicle.
    • Spirit Bell* - a large cast-iron bell that used to be tugged around on a military USATS transport. It is nowadays a fixture at Apogee Stadium.
    • Lighting of McConnell Tower* - after any athletic victory, the tower atop the Hurley Administration Building is lit up green where typically a gathered group below sings the Fight Song and UNT alma mater, "Glory to the Green".
    • Homecoming Bonfire* - UNT has lit a Homecoming bonfire since 1946 upon the return of WWII troops, and the Talons have managed the whole process since 1960. Entirely built by hand, members and alumni of the Talons spend the whole week camped out by the site to guard the bonfire from any threats, of which there have been numerous odd ones (including a time bomb) in the past. Ever since the bonfire collapse tragedy at A&M in 1999, UNT has maintained the largest bonfire in the state at 40'+ and supposedly recent iterations have been the largest pallet-constructed bonfires in the world. There's a special peninsula surrounded by a pond at the Apogee Stadium grounds designed specifically for holding the bonfire.
  • Eagle Claw* - like everyone else in the state, we have our own hand gesture. However, we're only a handful of colleges in Texas that don't accompany our gestures with some form of verbal "____, 'Em".
  • UNT state flag - a much better looking version of the ole Texas rag.
*It should be noted that all of the traditions marked with asterisks kind of have the quality of being... appropriated. The entry on traditions from this excellent unWikipedia article pretty well sums it up.
Campus and Surrounding Area
City Population: 114,100 - a 41% increase since 2000.
DFW Metroplex Population: 6,526,548 - largest in the South.
City Skyline The central sense of place in Denton beyond its two universities (oh hey, there's also Texas Women's University in town) is the Square and its surrounding area, highlighted by this sucker. The Courthouse on the Square is by far the most Instagram'd locale in town.
Iconic Campus Buildings:
Beyond Apogee Stadium, there a number of iconic buildings on campus including:
Local Dining:
Denton is going through a little bit of a restaurant renaissance at the moment and there seems to be great places opening all the time, so this is just the best of a huge list!
  • Breakfast
  • Lunch/Dinner
    • Rooster's $$ Interesting take on BBQ. Don't even try to attempt the Hell Burger Sliders.
    • Hannah's $$$$ The nicest place in town, and boy, is it nice.
    • J&J's $ In a town full of great pizza, my fave.
    • La Sabrocita $ Out of all the splendid, down to earth taco places, this one is king.
  • Coffee
    • Big Mike's $ Yeah! Occupy______ training grounds!
  • Drinks - It should be noted that Dentonites know how to drink rather well and our prices are the lowest in the DFW metroplex.
    • Fry Street Area (just off NE corner of campus)
    • + Lucky Lou's $ Can you say $.50-2.00 wells and sells more Jim Beam than anywhere else in the country? I can!
    • + Cool Beans $ Their burger plus the seasonal Shiner is a winner any time.
    • Square Area
    • + Oak St Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor $$ Second oldest house in Denton, one of the most beautiful and vast selections of local beers on-tap you will ever witness, giant biergarten-esque backyard.
    • + Paschall Bar "Like walking into Belgium" - a NYC band. Owned and operated by members of the band Midlake.
Random Trivia
  • Yes, the 1991 comedy Necessary Roughness, depicting a down on their-luck college football team starring Scott Bakula and Sinbad, was nearly completely filmed on our campus and used our facilities. Yes, the movie is weirdly well-reflective of both our and SMU's recent histories at the time. Yes, we both resent and relish in this one. You know what? Just, here: it'll be worth the three bucks. Added incentive, SI Swimsuit model turned place kicker, Kathy Ireland.
  • The O-line for the Mean Green only allowed 5 sacks overall last year, making our QB pocket the safest in the nation. Now if only DT could have done something with that.
  • The university and athletics programs were among the first to desegregate in the US in 1956.
  • UNT and FIU established a college football record of seven overtimes played in our 25-22 win over the Panthers in 2006.
  • Navy vs UNT in 2007 set the all time combined score total of a college football game with the Midshipmen winning 74-62.
  • As I mentioned before, UNT has the largest accredited College of Music by enrollment at just under 2,000 students, with Indiana always close behind. There are over 50 large ensembles for students to express their musical virtuosity. Combined with individual recitals, degree lectures, guest performances, and the other musical ventures that take place separate from the College, the total count for performances on campus in any calendar year easily tops 1,000+! This year's tally is going to be in the 1,100 range. UNT also offered the first ever degree in jazz studies in the mid Forties.
  • Within the jazz studies dept., there are nine hour-oriented lab bands as well as a handful of other jazz ensembles. The most notable of these is the One O'Clock Lab Band, which holds the distinction of being the only collegiate ensemble in America to be nominated for a Grammy Award (six and counting). Also, they're a personal favorite of the King of Thailand and have performed fowith him!
  • Notable alumni of the university include: Dr. Phil McGraw, Norah Jones, Peter Weller (Robocop), Eli Young Band, Neon Indian, Midlake, Don Henley (The Eagles! Supposedly Hotel California was written in Bruce Hall dorm), Lou Marini of the Blues Brothers, Bowling for Soup, Roy Orbison, [you start noticing the trend with the music?] Lyle Mays, Pat Boone, Steve Turre, Billy Harper, Meat Loaf (yep), Brave Combo, The Baptist Generals, Stone Cold Steve Austin, actor Thomas Hayden Church, Lewis Abernathy, Jr., architect O'Neil Ford, cartoonist Kerry Gammill, pulitzer prize-winning author Larry McCurtry, journalist Bill Moyers, golfer Don January, a couple of Miss Americas, politicians Congressman Dr. Michael Burgess (meh), Ray Roberts, Saudi Ambassador to the US Adel al-Jubeir, Dick Armey, etc. (Also, uh..... this guy and supposedly more of his type.)
  • Memenote: She's Overly Attached to UNT! Yeah, she went here.
What Is and What is to Come
2012 was a step backwards for the Mean Green. There were many opportunities for our guys to pull through where they ultimately fell flat. Combined with some key injuries and an increasingly conservative play-calling mindset, and 4-8 actually seems pretty amazing.
The third year of the McCarney era though is looking super bright. It's our 100th year of football! We just joined CUSA (YES)! And though severely underrated, our recruiting classes over the last two years are looking to turn out extremely well for us.
Specifically, let me remind ya'll of QB Brock Bergland (thanks, Kansas). Brock has had a really interesting time getting to Denton, but when he came out of Valor Christian in Colorado as a dual-threat guy, he was rather highly touted. Why don't ya'll take a gander at the company he keeps on that list. Ohhhhhhhhh, yeah. He gave our defense hell last year leading the scout team offense, but unfortunately, Brock pulled a hamstring out of Winter workouts and missed a lot of reps in the Spring. What little we saw of him in the Spring game was incredibly exciting (see: Manziel like), but very brief as well. Tight-lipped McCarney has not yet named a starter at QB for 2013.
Also, please no one look at our absolutely abysmally thin defensive line. I think at last word, there's literally four players on the entire roster listed for the line. Ouch.
Overtime
Okay, so why hasn't UNT broken out in football over the last 100 years while everyone else in the DFW metroplex has? In a word, music. In another few, the Best Small Town in America. At any given time, there's something like 300 musical acts or bands brewing around town performing in 25 official venues and a slew of unofficial house venues. And they're amazing. Denton as a music scene has been garnering international acclaim for decades and in some minds, has far surpassed any other offerings in the state for what a music scene should be (as in, non-corporate; sorry, Austin). For a possibly un-updated listing of amazing Denton based or founded bands, see here. All of this combined with 100+ festivals, a generally great 'other' arts scene, awesome shopping, the Square, and a metroplex already brimming to capacity with two other collegiate athletic powerhouses plus 5+ professional sports teams, and well, Mean Green football gets the short end of the stick when they're losing. Which, they've lost a lot.
But, that doesn't necessarily mean they won't win in the future. :)

2012.02.29 04:18 wanderingsong My top 25 CLASSIC vocal trance tracks & remixes. YouTube links included.

Because vocal trance isn't just the last three years. All 2007 or earlier, since apparently that's 'classic' nowadays.
(actually, considering I've seen 2008-2010 tracks get referred to as "classic"...never mind.)
Disclaimer: This is all my opinion, and also just scratches the surface of vocal trance. Yes, there are lots of other classics not here, but these are my favorites.
In no particular order, but numbered for clarity's sake, with year of original track or remix release:
  1. Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence 2004 (Above & Beyond's 21st Century Remix) [2004]
  2. Above & Beyond feat. Richard Bedford - Alone Tonight [2006]
  3. Above & Beyond feat. Hannah Thomas - Home (Club Mix) [2007]
  4. Oceanlab - Satellite [2004]
  5. Ferry Corsten - Beautiful [2006]
  6. Armin van Buuren pres. Perpetuous Dreamer feat. Elles de Graaf - The Sound of Goodbye [2001]
  7. Andain - Beautiful Things (Gabriel & Dresden Unplugged Remix) [2003]
  8. Paul van Dyk feat. Lo-Fi Sugar - Castaway [2007]
  9. Tiesto feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw - Just Be [2004]
  10. BT feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw - Dreaming [1999]
  11. ATB feat. Tiff Lacey - Ecstasy (Club Mix) [2004]
  12. Dogzilla - Without You [2005]
  13. Oceanlab - Sky Falls Down (Armin van Buuren Remix) [2002]
  14. Sarah McLachlan - Fallen (Gabriel & Dresden Anti-Gravity Remix) [2003]
  15. Delerium feat. Rani - Underwater (Above & Beyond's 21st Century Remix) [2001]
  16. Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Gabriel & Dresden Remix) [2002]
  17. Carrie Skipper - Time Goes By (Super 8 Bangin' Mix) [2005]
  18. Ferry Corsten feat. Howard Jones - Into The Dark (Ferry Fix) [2006, remix 2008]
  19. Luminary - Amsterdam (Smith & Pledger Remix) [2005]
  20. Cosmic Gate feat. Denise Rivera - Body of Conflict [2007]
  21. Armin van Buuren feat. Justine Suissa - Burned with Desire (Rising Star Mix) [2003]
  22. Above & Beyond feat. Zoe Johnston - No One on Earth (Gabriel & Dresden Remix) [2004]
  23. ATB feat. Karen Ires - Desperate Religion [2007]
  24. Ridgewalkers feat. El - Find (Andy Moor Remix) [2004]
  25. Kyau vs Albert - Velvet Morning [2003]
Honorable mentions:
--aka a lot of tracks that are really iconic but aren't, uh, among my favorites.
I could also do a list of overlooked/underrated vocal tracks since the giant vocal explosion happened in 2008 or 2009. Sigh.

2011.02.28 01:19 zero_iq [Help] Implementing Moone's VX axioms in Minecraft...

Hi guys. Inspired by the 16-bit ALU implemented in Minecraft, I thought I'd have a go at implementing the axioms of Moone's VX reflexive logic algebra in Minecraft using redstone... I reckon Minecraft should be fast enough to emulate basic VX harmonics with a delta of around .0001. No great shakes, but I thought it would be a technically impressive feat just to get it up and running...
But I'm stuck! I've managed to implement the first 21 axioms using 16x16x4 redstone circuits, but I left the hardest one until last... and now I've realised I can't implement Moone's isomorphic non-linear matrix transformer without a double-twisted ratcheting redstone block in order to simulate the necessary field density modulations, and Minecraft doesn't have one. I could unroll the reflexive logic, but I don't see how I could implement it using redstone with less than a 200x200 block area in Minecraft, and I'd need at least a couple of hundred of those to get a basic VX emulation running....
Any ideas?
