21M EST Looking for a creative friend to help push each other to our goals (20+) [Friendship] / [Activities]

2020.09.09 15:48 GeneralFly 21M EST Looking for a creative friend to help push each other to our goals (20+) [Friendship] / [Activities]

[What I’m looking for]
I'm looking for a quasi partnership/friendship where we push each other to create new things while checking in on each other. And even if we’re already working on something I always find creating more fun with a friend you can share your progress and process with. At first I’m fine with messaging but eventually, I’d prefer some voice chatting on discord. It makes creating so much easier than over text haha.
[Personality/About Me]
I’m a creative guy who likes to entertain people; whether that’s through laughs, or cool stories, or good music. I write down my thoughts/ideas all the time in lists but I want to follow through more with making the art I want to. I’m an extrovert, I love talking and connecting with people, the collaborative process in creating is one of the parts I love most. I also overthink a lot and try to make my stuff perfect to the point that I sometimes don’t enjoy it as much. Finding a partne friend to work with would help give me the collab/camaraderie aspect of creating even if I might be working alone or from home. Which would make it easier to go through the not as fun parts of creating alone.
[Creative Pursuits]
Film/Video: Writing, Cinematography, Editing
This is the only thing that I would prefer if you had an interest in; so that we could talk to each other about it and learn together, maybe even work on something together! I’m interested in narrative filmmaking as well as comedic sketches, and commentary videos.
Movies: Her, Django Unchained, Interstellar
TV: Game of Thrones, Turn, The Last Kingdom, Great British Bake Off
Music: Singing, Songwriting, Production
I love music with the deepest part of my soul. Long before I knew I liked film I was singing in chorus, and (trying) to learn how to play the clarinet. Mainly I songwrite and sing (because I can’t make the music yet) but I’ve been interested and am starting to pick it up so we could talk about that too!
Genres: Hip-hop, Funk, Jazz, Indie-pop
Artists: Drake, Son Kuma, Derek Pope, Post Malone, Logic, Travis Scott
Acting, Voice Acting
I went to college and majored in Theatre Arts and concentrated in acting. I’m more of a camera actor though. I love talking about it! Especially in the context of a TV/Movie. I’m also interested in voice acting, I’m really into anime so I love hearing awesome VA. I’d like to do voice work for a broad range of things though.
Performance/Comedy
Think of this as like the Youtube, Standup, Comedy show area. I love making jokes with my friends and seeing people laugh. I want to use comedy more in my writing and my performing so if you like to talk about comedy that works too!
Comedy shows: Mr. Kim’s Convenience, The Office, Letterkenny
[Interests]
Other things we can talk about!
Anime - Favs: Hunter x Hunter, Boku no Hero, Erased, Your Name
History - History nerd for many different time periods/subjects.
Favs: World Wars, Sengoku Jidai (Japan’s Warring States Period)
SCI FI - If it’s anything related to sci-fi I’m already interested say no more haha
Japan- I took a year of Japanese in college and studied more on my own so I’d love to practice with a friend! Also beyond the language, I’m very interested in the culture and the history of Japan.
Reading - I used to read a LOT, I don’t have as much time as I used to but I’ve gotten into audiobooks and can read much more again!
Favs: Game of Thrones (ASOIAF), Harry Potter. Trying to get into more sci-fi like Dune so I’d love to talk about that as well,
Games - Favs: Mass Effect, Deus Ex HR, Crusader Kings, Tabletop Simulator; also starting to get into DnD
Cannabis - You don’t have to drink/ do drugs to be my friend, haha, but I really like the science behind cannabis, I’ll spend some time watching videos about it chemical effects, consumption (of course), and I’m interested in growing. Again no worries if you don’t though.
I’m also open to othe new interests so I’d be curious to learn yours!
[Message]
If this creative partnership/friendship sounds like what you’ve been missing too send me a message! I’ll be at work today so I’ll check any messages when I come home later today.
Thanks for reading!

2020.08.01 01:26 skn604 26/M/Canada Looking for a friend.

First off, I am a single dad. And I am proud of it. I work in residential construction. And am a aspiring content creator by night. And by that I mean I live stream video games on twitch. I also make YouTube videos that I edit myself, the video and thumbnails. My buddies and I are starting a podcast very soon.
I love movies and tv shows.
Tv: Brooklyn 99, Letterkenny, Sons of Anrchy, Arrow, to name a few.
Movies: DC and Marvel, action movies, comedies, not neccesarily picky.
Huge country music fan, you dont need to be but I love singing along in my truck. :P
I'd prefer to email with a female, as I've had male pen pals and they caused more conflicts than I asked for over stupid questions.
Feel free to message me and see where it goes, or feel free to lurk in my twitch streams [link in bio] to see the kind of person I am :P
Thanks for considering your friendly neighbourhood .. uh guy. Lol

2020.07.18 23:40 JavierLoustaunau [DISCUSSION] My top 10 Netflix shows this sub does NOT talk about.

My arbitrary methodology: I thought about shows I really enjoyed but never see mentioned around here. Then I did a search and saw if they came up with very few hits, threads or mentions.
What to expect from my list: animated shows, surreal stuff, foreign shows, shows with POC protagonists. Also minimal padding, I hate padded out shows.
Reason for posting: People complain that all we ever talk about are the same shows (Dark, Stranger Things, Black Mirror, etc).
Chewing Gum (edit: I suck, this is no longer distributed by Netflix)
Similar to: It's always sunny in Philadelphia, Letterkenny, Kimmy Schmidt
Pitch: An incredibly sheltered young woman decides to lose her virginity.
Why it is good: It is super cringy and yet you care about every character. This raises the stakes and you are not constantly rooting for her to fail as you would on Always Sunny.
Diablero
Similar to: Buffy, Supernatural, Ash vs the Evil Dead, Hellblazer (comic).
Pitch: A demon hunter teams up with his nurse sister, a priest and a girl who can be possessed at will to stop a supernatural conspiracy.
Why it is good: it is funny, character driven and extremely original given the worn out premise. Season 2 has almost no filler (a rare treat for Netflix originals). The effects are low rent, but better than you remember Buffy or Supernatural being.
Kipo
Similar to: Stephen Universe, Adventure Time, Planet of the apes.
Pitch: a teenaged girl raised in a bunker must survive in a world of giant monsters and mutant animals after the bunker is attacked.
Why it is good: it can be serious and it has some drama and great action scenes, but ultimately it is an incredibly upbeat and positive show that parents will not mind watching with their kids, or watching alone.
Scissor seven
Similar to: naruto, kung fu hustle, adult swim shows
Pitch: a broke barber is trying to use his scissors to become the greatest assassin in the world.
Why it is good: Each episode is super short (15 mins) and incredibly dumb until it decides to get smart or sentimental by fleshing out throwaway characters. Sometimes it looks like something an 8 year old would draw and sometimes it has the best action scenes of the year.
Gentefied
Similar to: Vida, bobs burgers, superstore
Pitch: a mom and pop restaurant has to choose between going out of business or having a cousin who is a chef change everything about the place.
Why it is good: It is a migrant story, a small business story and a story about gentrification and changing neighborhoods. It is funny, dramatic and has some of the best acting I've seen in recent history.
Aggrestsuko
Similar to: the office, bojack horseman
Pitch: A young office worker deals with tons of frustration during the day, so she lets lose at night by singing death metal karaoke.
Why it is good: Feels like cheating but it barely came up in my searches... it is just a big deal elsewhere in popular culture. It is a very adult cartoon despite having practically zero R rated content; instead it is about adult feelings of alienation, stress, sexism, professional dissatisfaction and loneliness... with hello kitty cuteness.
I think you should leave
Similar to: Mr Show, Kids in the Hall, Key and Peele.
Pitch: a series of increasing more and more bizarre sketches about awkward situations and strange characters.
Why it is good: Basically a bunch of sketches rejected by Saturday Night Live and for good reason, most of them only work because of how passionate and committed the delivery is. Also lots of cameos from good up and coming comedians.
Medical Police
Similar to: Naked Gun, Childrens Hospital (it is a spin off), CSI.
Pitch: two doctors are drafted into solving an international manmade pandemic.
Why it is good: it is incredibly stupid, incredibly good at lampooning overused tropes and the deadpan comedic delivery is top notch. It is the one pandemic show that will make you forget the pandemic.
Carole and Tuesday
Similar to: Glee, futurama, Cowboy Bebop.
Pitch: two young musicians on Mars rise from street performers to global sensations all the while the planet is undergoing a political upheaval.
Why it is good: It is an intensely political and adult show from the point of view of two teenagers who do not always get what is going on and just want to make art. The show has super good music and it is created by Shinchiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Kids on the Slope, Samurai Champloo).
Kakegurui
Similar to: Yu-Gi-Oh, hunger games, sherlock
Pitch: A highschool where the wealthiest and most elite students gamble away their futures in high stakes games.
Why it is good: It is possibly one of the most irrational yet most tense shows you can watch. If you can suspend your disbelief enough for something like The Hunger Games, then you can enjoy extremely high stakes gambling games where teenagers risk their freedom or even bodily harm. Similar to magic tricks every game is rigged and every game is explained by the genius but mysterious protagonist. You can choose between the over the top anime and the stagy but ingenious live action version, I recommend watching both. Very much not for kids though.

2020.07.05 16:24 jmcliff08 I hate Hamilton. Couldn’t even finish watching it on Disney +

Hamilton hater here
Ok, I was super excited to finally get to watch Hamilton on Disney+. Yesterday, for the 4th, I got my friends and family to watch it.
It’s hard to follow, so much rapping and singing but no dialogue; what I know about the real Hamilton is that he was kind of a big dick. To be fair, what I know is from the Drunk History episode.
First, it plays like a 90s after school special that a bunch of white people decided if we put it to rap then the kids will like it.
Second, if Hamilton was a playa like the musical states and he was such dreamy eyes, then Miranda casting himself as Hamilton is a casting mistake. To me Miranda isn’t that attractive. He’s a cold dude though!
Third, what’s with the singing/rapping and no dancing just a person on stage...it feels forced with no emotional context. There’s no build up to the emotion. Like I wanted to emotionally connect to the the plot but I couldn’t. I had such a hard time understand what they were singing. To be fair (#letterkenny) I do have a learning disability which makes it hard to process what I hear. But, I can’t be the only one to have found this difficult. Especially if the few articles I read on line recommend you listen to the sound track before you go see it.
I’ve had amazing emotional experiences seeing broadway productions of Wicked, the Phantom, even the Les Miserables movie. But the minuscule amount of dialogue in Hamilton made the sensory experience overwhelming to me.
To be honest, you’d be better off watching the Hamilton episode of Drunk History with Lin Manuel Miranda. That’s the right about of wine (alcohol) to cheese factor that comes with the Hamilton Musical.
RIP my comments.

I have never been shy in saying that Canadian culture is predominantly white. It does explain a lot of what makes up the Canadian zeitgeist, whether it’s the unique Canadian redneck humor of Trailer Park Boys or Letterkenny or the fact that alternative rock probably trudged on a good extra five years in Canada when it had been mostly dead in the rest of the world. What’s presented to the world as generally consumed Canadian art does betray the multi racial makeup of this country. Cultures don’t get integrated in Canada, the “melting pot” is not this country’s philosophy and for a long period of time those immigrant groups, not being forced to be “Canadian first,” kept to themselves and in the process kept their culture within their communities. While the progress of time has started to see heavier integration and adoption of the various cultures that make up Canada this somewhat isolated communal existence was one of the few downsides of Canada’s much touted “multiculturalism.”
The effects of this extends to music and how it’s consumed. For years minorities have struggled to get a foothold into the music industry, outside factors aside, if for no other reason then it was difficult for them to find their niche. Even as hip hop began to explode on a global scale homegrown artists despite their talents found it difficult to gain any traction even within Canada itself. Most are part of immigrant group, while some Blacks in Canada are descended from escaped American black slaves the majority are immigrants predominantly from the Caribbean. Their influence on Canadian cities is tremendous, using a personal example my wife likes to make fun of the fact that half the time I say “tings” instead of “things.” However despite this heavy urban cultural influence many artists failed to really make something out of it. The likes of artists such as The Dream Warriors and Maestro Fresh Wes felt more like anomalies and instances of lightning in a bottle than some sort of sustained movement. When hip hop was getting huge in the 90’s in America few Canadian artists reaped the benefits and even their success seemed more CanCon related than serious pushes from record labels to get these artists known.
This frustration with the music industry manifested itself during the 2005 Get Up festival when veteran and criminally underrated Toronto based rapper Kardinal Offishal smashed a guitar on stage during his set. Originally may saw this as a direct diss to k-os himself, then known in promotional photos to always have an acoustic guitar on his back, but Kardinal clarified this in later interviews as a show of frustration to the Canadian music industry and Canadian radio that favors homegrown rock artists over those of other genres. And yet even if it was directed at k-os would he would have a compelling argument. Ever since his debut k-os had mixed in various styles into his own brand of hip hop. His first hit single “Heavy Only Knows” is a laid back and somber acoustic affair. His songs were being played on alt rock radio. Was he getting an unfair leg up because he decided to play a guitar?
However the idea of k-os without his eclectic sound seems just as much a betrayal to the artists itself. Born Kevin Bereton k-os grew up with his family in Toronto, his father then a Jehovah’s Witness minister to various chapters in the Greater Toronto Area. When he was in grade three his family moved back to their native Trinidad where k-os steeped himself in music to deal with being away from Canada. By his teen years k-os returned to Canada with his mother, his father remaining in Trinidad as a computer engineer for BWIA, Trinidad’s national airline. His family settled in Whitby, Ontario, a suburban town just east of Toronto where her pursued his music ambitions based on his own insecurities. He found performing music attracted people towards him making him feel “powerful and secure.” During this time k-os became a fan of a variety of music, ranging from New Order, Depeche Mode, Rx Bandits, Michael Jackson, Boogie Down Productions, Slick Rick and A Tribe Called Quest. His adopted stage name was intended to be a less aggressive pseudonym styled after KRS-One and stands for “knowledge of self” though k-os admits early on it stood for “Kevin’s Original Sound.”
k-os eventually attended Carelton university for one year to appease his father. He lasted one semester. He returned to Toronto where he attended York University. There he met Nigel Williams, a member of the experimental hip hop collective Pocket Dwellers who encouraged k-os to pursue music. In 1993 he released his first single “Musical Essence” and even produced a music video of the song with a VideoFACT grant. The song was produced by two friends, Clarence Gruff and Kevin Risto (Risto would later be part of the producing duo Midi Mafia who produced 50 Cent’s single “21 Questions.”) k-os shortly after dropped out of university to focus on music. After gaining a bit of traction with “Musical Essence” k-os was approached by NBA player John Sailey who became his first manager. During this time he was invited on the 1995 Hip Hop Explosion tour which featured other Canadian hip hop acts like Rascalz and Ghetto Concept. With the assitance of Sailey and American songwriter Raphael Saddiq k-os began work on his debut album, releasing his second single “Rise Like The Sun” during this time. However his increasing dissatisfaction with his work was what lead to him taking a hiatus from the music industry. According to k-os during this period of the late 90’s he had written multiple albums but found the music to be “pretentious and derivative” and he was still “trying to figure out who he was.” He continued to live with Sailey in LA until he was invited to live in Vancouver by Red1 of Rascalz. k-os was renewed by his time in Vancouver and was even asked to have a guest verse of the Canadian classic hip hop track “Northern Touch” which featured the hottest Canadian hip hop acts at the time but was unable to due to previous commitments. He made his first live performance appearance in years when he performed at North by Northwest in support of Vancouver band Namedropper.
In 2002 k-os would finally release his first full length album Exit, an album that would present’s k-os’s propensity to genre mash. The first single “Heaven Only Knows” began to garner heavy rotation on Much Music and the album became a critical hit in both Canada and worldwide. The critical success of Exit lead to a number of awards as well as a collaboration with the Chemical Brothers. Still despite all this sales of Exit didn’t hit the marks such an album was expected, only selling 40,000 units in America and even less in Canada, 27,000 total albums sold. It seems like the joke that the album was named Exit because it would be his final one would come to be true.
By 2004 k-os debunked those statements by releasing his followup album Joyful Rebellion. While it could be argued that a lot of what was explored musically on Exit those areas on Joyful Rebellion are looked at through a different and a sense of refinement. k-os has stated that the general theme of the album is a general dissatisfaction with the current state of hip hop. On opening track “Emcee Murder” he’s about as blunt he’s ever lyrically on the album, flamenco guitar and orchestral string add a billowing quality to words like “Holding my raps, Olden is golden and black, Extolling virtues of rap, With monkeys riding my back, I see them falling, Doing commercials and balling, I'm not a hater but she's closing the gate” to what it admittedly a fairly standard mid 00’s take on the commercialization of rap.
While it’d be incorrect to call Joyful Rebellion a sad album there’s a heavyheartedness that exists within the songs that both betray the joyful in its title and the more breezy musical influences k-os looks to explore. “Crucial” is a prime example, it’s deeply seeped in classic breezy reggae influences but it’s used in a way to describe k-os’s own inability to find himself in the Toronto music scene an eventually ends with k-os with the words “Change words, Ch-Change burns, We came first, That's why we're in chains, And there's no one to blame it on” before a squealing rock guitar introduced in the bridge takes us out. “Dirty Water,” featuring fellow Canadian Sam Roberts, mixes new wave elements and Sade influences that would be the perfect backdrop for penthouse city watching if it didn’t contain lyrics on unrequited love and insecurity over ones lower income background.
Still the album finds moments to be a bit lighter and has great success with them. There’s a reason why “Crabbuckit” was such a big hit in Canada. It’s a jazzy foot stomper, something you wouldn’t expect in hip hop in 2004, or Canada, or well anywhere on the mainstream musical landscape at the time but despite its title being a reference of k-os’s own struggle (the notion that crabs in a bucket keep trying to claw their way up only to push each other down) it keeps the preaching to a minimum and would rather sing about having a good time in Toronto on a Friday night. “B-Boy Stance” might start with the eye rolling “It’s so hard to stay authentic” however the song revels in its old school hip hop beats, sound very much like the old school influences k-os has cited and reminds that while k-os might preach and posture he is anything but humble, his words reminding everyone that on top of his “traditional” musical influences he is a more than serviceable MC. The highlight of this album is naturally when all these elements coalesce and find a near perfect song for them to exist on. “Man I Used To Be” is veritable sonic feast for the ears, a bit of Michael Jackson influenced “Billie Jean”-esque music, complete with falsetto “ohh-ohhs.” While k-os struggles with idea of crossover success and the changes he’s made since “coming up from the underground” we’re treated with an epic take 80’s R&B infused pop, all leading up to the climax where strings swirl after k-os lists out all the things he’s done to try to anchor as he repeats the chorus with a heavy dose of heart, “I tried it, I couldn't find it, Now I just wanna get back to me, Awe baby, hoo hoo, Back into the man I used to be.”
Even in the years after k-os’ success home grown hip hop continued to struggle to find its footing in the Canadian musical landscape. While some successes like Nova Scotia’s Classified did pop up there really wasn’t a huge boon of hip hop in Canada until the like of Drake and The Weeknd showed up. And it’d be tenuous at best to say k-os had a hand in those artists ascension (though it’s fun to note a young Drake appeared as guest on a TV live performance special k-os did for Much Music) and on top of that k-os after Joyful Rebellion seemed more in tune with Canada’s rock scene than its hip hop one (k-os made contributions on Broken Social Scene’s self titled album.) Still if nothing else Joyful Rebellion marked a moment where a Canadian hip artists was able to sustain their momentum and popularity beyond a single song or even single album, Joyful Rebellion would go on to be a platinum selling album, k-os would continue to get hits and release music and it seemed that Canadians were ready and willing to adopt one of their own hip hop artists. Did it take a guitar slung over his back and dropping Tragically Hip references to get there? Maybe, but it’s the small steps that are needed to make the big leaps.

2020.06.01 19:18 Caliban821 A Lot of Thoughts on Meet The Parents

With it being the start of Pride month and the losses of Dan and Noah at the CSAs, I find myself needing to express a lot of thoughts about Meet The Parents. Not to take away anything from LetterKenny and the other SC nominees, but it perplexes me still that MTP didn’t take the writing award. Putting aside all the press and attention it got as well as the impact on the community, it’s a near perfect piece of scriptwriting and perhaps Dan Levy’s best work on the show.
While the script leans much more on the dramatic side, Dan still infuses with enough in character humor to allow the audience to laugh and to release tension. The script is tightly well-paced but it’s the dialog that really sings-filled with plenty of text and subtext. We’ve all reacted to Patrick’s “I know my parents are good people but…” speech. The power of that opening line comes from its succinctness. It honestly captures not only the conflict and anxiety Patrick is feeling, but of any queer person dealing with coming out. Dan conveys those emotions without resorting to some longwinded, scene-chewing monologue. Noah doesn’t actually have a lot to work with but he pulls it off not just due his own acting prowess but because those words, while few, are very effectively chosen. Those choices are not just skillful, but brilliant and inspired. That deceptive and layered simplicity extends to many other scenes as well, both in the main plot and the secondary plot involving Moira
The other noteworthy aspect of the episode is, like many good scripts, it respects the intelligence and intuition of the audience. There’s very little spoonfeeding but a great deal of subtle commentary and consistent callbacks.
Some critics have often lauded how much David has grown because of the way he reacts in this episode compared to Patrick’s previous deception concerning Rachel. However those critics got it wrong. It’s Patrick who is showing growth. Patrick is someone, despite his claims of being a “take-charge guy”, who has been ruled by his fears and desire to avoid confrontation. It’s a failing he cannot acknowledge even to himself. His dishonesty in the past with both Rachel and David stems from that. For the first time, Patrick is able to admit that he’s scared shitless and the shame that he feels is his own perceived weakness. The willingness to show such vulnerability is a huge step for Patrick and only made possible by his relationship with David.
What the episode does confirm is David’s compassion and empathy when it comes to issues of sexuality. It jibes with his willingness to talk to Connor in Season 1, his reaction when Patrick revealed he never kissed a man before or encouraging Patrick to date other men. David is not only a man very confident and comfortable in his sexuality but one who has not forgotten what the journey getting there was like. His response to Patrick isn’t just words of comfort for people struggling to come out. It’s also a reminder from Dan Levy to the queer community to always be sensitive to those people. Whether they’re 18 or 80, they need support and understanding.
That scene will also shape future interactions between them with David likely realizing he will often have to be the proactive one when it comes to discussing important matters. And that he will need to be the strong one from time to time thus allowing Patrick to be “weak”.
Further there is the reminder what an accepting place Schitt’s Creek is. Being gay is a non-issue in a town where the motto is “where everyone fits in”. Patrick makes a comment on how easy it is for him to be himself in this community without the typical queer support system. There is no fear of homophobia. Again critics have commented how commendable Johnny Rose is in assuming that it’s the business relationship the Brewers don’t know about. But what’s overlooked is that Roland assumes the same thing. He thinks nothing is shocking about 2 men in a romantic relationship and makes a joke about Johnny being behind the times. The town is a reflection of Roland and past generations of Schitts. But of course such a magical place is not enough to alleviate the anxieties Patrick has built up over the years.
As I stated, I think this episode is near perfect. The only “flaw” for me in this story is I wish there was more. I didn’t want it to end

2020.06.01 03:06 JHex2 31 M looking for people to share with

Hi there, I'm looking for people to share stories with, learn from, and grow with.
I'm the kind of person who enjoys engaging people in their passions and giving them an opportunity to talk about stuff they never get a chance to.
I have nothing but time for people who are interested in building perspective and challenging themselves. I try my best to be honest and supportive at the same time.
Don't worry, no funny business here. I'm decidedly asexual, and not particularly bound to any ideals of masculinity. I take care of my business and do the right thing when I can afford to.
And no i'm not always this damn grave and melodramatic. Sometimes I just like to watch letterkenny and sing country music badly.

Thanks to KizunoOtoko and SupahSteve for their tireless WQT/Recruiter Thread work.

New Moderators

We went through the applications for moderators at length, and I want to thank everyone that submitted -- we had 99 applications for mods. We like to spread the mod team out amongst rank/background/experience/status, etc when it comes to Army background, so that we're not just a bunch of degenerate E3s with two years in, and so we're not a bunch of landed gentry looking down upon the peasants. We definitely look for people who 'understand' the culture here, and have a strong history of participation in the sub. We also looked at who had applied last year, and still applied this year again. Please know that if things change in the near future, and we need more support, we will reach back out to those who applied. I still have last years entries; I don't just toss em out. So you'll see some new faces on the mod team this week hopefully, and, again, I appreciate the community being what it is, and everyone for applying to help out.
Additionally, I hope to have the first phase of the Census report out at the end of week.
Thank you to everyone who participated! It'll take me a minute to get all the awards handed out so please be patient!

2019.08.09 12:40 jfresh1999 (OC) Dundon DIYs the Hurricanes (An Alternate Reality)

(Previous parts of this series include: Re-Chiarelling the Oilers, Moneyballing the Sens, Covertly Tanking the Wild, and Frenchifying the Canadiens.)

Part I

"Okay losers listen up!"
This wasn't the first time team owner Tom Dundon had greeted the Carolina Hurricanes' analytics department this way, but they did not know that this was the first time he had gotten the office number right on his first try. After a long season the marketing department and janitors were no longer taken aback by these frequent interruptions.
"I've just had a brilliant idea. No doubt we had a good season last year, couple sell outs, good shit all around. But we gotta bring it to the next level okay? Now answer this question: what sells in sports?"
One brave analyst answered: "Winning?" "Superstars?" offered another.
Dundon shook his head in disbelief. "What? No, sex, you nerds, ever have it? Sex sells. We've got eyeballs on these games now but to get people really caring about this team we need to get a full roster of real dimes. Handsome motherfuckers. What do hockey players call attractive people?"
A pause.
"Sir, none of us have actually played hockey before."
"I think the guys on Letterkenny call them rockets?"
Dundon clapped and pointed at him. "Alright, there we go, we need more rockets in our locker room than fucking NASA." Then he turned around, kicked over a garbage can, and disappeared through the door.
The analytics department wasted no time in devising algorithms and stats to quantify player attractiveness. Very quickly a vicious divide emerged between two measurements: the Cool or Rugged Sexiness Indicator (CORSI) and the Foxiness-Expressing Number which Indexes Cute Kings (FENWICK). It all came down to type and preference: CORSI adherents argued for strong, bearded, often Canadian players, while FENWICK fanatics extolled the virtues of prettier players, usually non-threatening Scandinavians. It was eventually acknowledged that these met at the Strapping, Handsome and Rather Pretty (SHARP) intersection, but nonetheless conflict still raged. After a day of furious debate it was decided that they would deliver Dundon a roster split between the three categories:
Filip Forsberg (+6.5 FENWICK) - Tyler Seguin (+3.5 SHARP) - Brock Boeser (+4.7 SHARP) Gabriel Landeskog (+8.5 FENWICK) - Adam Henrique (+3.7 CORSI) - Leon Draisaitl (+5.6 SHARP) Tom Wilson (+4.3 CORSI) - Alex Wennberg (+7.5 FENWICK) - Blake Wheeler (+3.8 CORSI) Marcus Foligno (+3.4 CORSI) - Elias Lindholm (+5.6 FENWICK) - Andre Burakovsky (+3.4 FENWICK) Roman Josi (+7.4 FENWICK) - Erik Karlsson (+6.8 FENWICK) Shea Weber (+4.5 CORSI) - Kris Letang (+7.2 SHARP) Brady Skjei (+4.6 SHARP) - Erik Gudbranson (+3.9 CORSI) Henrik Lundqvist (+8.2 SHARP) Braden Holtby (+3.6 CORSI)
Proud of themselves, but feeling somewhat uncomfortable, the analytics team printed out this list and called Dundon to come back and retrieve it.
When he arrived he looked at it and smiled "Great work, alright, and this algorithm is all loaded on the computer over there?"
"Yes sir"
"Okay great, thanks guys, you're fired, best wishes"
As each of the analysts grumpily gathered their laptops and Funko Pops into cardboard boxes and left PNC Arena, Dundon folded the list into a paper airplane and yelled "Hey Don! You still work for me?"
The veteran manager walked into the office. "Yes, Tom, I still do."
Dundon fired the paper airplane directly at Waddell's forehead and it fell to the floor. "This is a list of players, I'm gonna need you to trade for these guys ASAP, got it?"
Waddell muttered through gritted teeth something like "...never in Atlanta..."
"Oh yeah you turtle-looking motherfucker? Well why don't you go and work for them then? You're fired, fuckface."
By the end of the day, Dundon had fired everyone he could find in the building. Then he sat down at the computer that had the handsomeness algorithm loaded onto it. Google Chrome was open. These fuckers had been using the internet at work? He wished he could fire them again. But he noticed the website on the screen.
"What the hell is HFBoards?"
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Part II

This site was incredible - Dundon didn't realize there were so many hockey fans. But here they all were, speculating on rumours, constructing rosters, and, most incredibly, proposing trades. He had been paying out the ass all year for front office staff and yet there were thousands of people on this website coming up with trades for free. He felt like a kid on Christmas morning - receiving gifts without having to give anything to anyone else. He completely forgot about the handsomeness list he'd asked for just a few hours before.
Just then a social media intern who had been in the washroom when he dismissed the rest of her department poked her head into the room. Dundon immediately tried to fire her (he knew how to use Twitter, why was he paying someone to do it?) but it turned out she actually wasn't getting paid anything. So he recruited her to a new project.
"I need you to record every trade proposal our fans have made on this website this summer."
And she did.
1. Justin Faulk for Antti Raanta 2. James Riemer for Martin Jones (1 million retained) 3. Warren Foegele and a 2nd for Nikita Gusev
"That's it? Alright well hold on, I'll get these done quick then."
But when he called that lanky dork in Arizona whose name he couldn't remember and offered him the first deal, he was hung up on immediately. The same thing happened twice more.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Well," the intern started, "it seems like our fans might overvalue our players a bit."
"We made the fucking third round, all our players should have value out the ass! How am I supposed to know how much I can get for these guys?"
"Well, there's a kind of thread on this forum called 'Value Of:' where you name a player and people tell you what they'd be willing to trade for them."
"Perfect, make one of those and I'll start hitting the phones."

Epilogue

That fall, the fans at PNC Arena thought they were buying tickets to hockey games, but what they got was even more impressive: a one-man show. They would hear Tom Dundon announce the starting lineups ("Why am I playing some asshole to read a script?") and sing the national anthem. ("This isn't a fucking talent show, and people say I have a great voice.") They'd see him run up and down the aisles serving popcorn and drinks, and even interact with children as the new mascot ("Look kid, you want a fuckin' high five or not? Okay, quit hugging me you fuckin' perv."). Long after the games were done, an exhausted Dundon could be found sweeping up trash. It almost wasn't worth it. But at the end of the night, when he looked at the balance sheet and the single employee expense - the NHL had refused his request to drive the Zamboni himself - he was filled with a quiet comfort.
As the team tumbled down the standings, Dundon barely noticed. He didn't have much time to watch the games anyway, and he only looked at the scoreboard when one of the pixels went out and he had to fix it. But there came a point, with the season finally done, when he realized that he had barely had a second of free time all year. His hair was turning white from a lack of sleep. Worst of all, there hadn't been anyone to fire in months. But then he realized something else. As he walked into the bathroom with a mop, he stared at his gaunt face in the mirror, took a deep breath and whispered
"You're fired"
He suddenly felt an exhilarating freedom wash over him. Then he put down his mop, walked outside, breathed in fresh air for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, and just began to walk. He was never seen again.

Next time: Jim Rutherford decides to deal with his Tom Wilson problem once and for all.

2019.04.01 09:36 kr0mbopulosm1ke The best Christmas party ever is the best holiday episode ever and if you disagree you’ve got a problem with me and I suggest you let that marinate.

I’m a sucker for holiday themed episodes of shows, and up until this point the Pats episode was my favorite but holy shit, I’m laughing my ass off. Every character is at their best. Gail mocking pulling her dentures out is actually the first time I’ve ever laughed at Gail. Coach singing Christmas Lover had me in tears. Drunk Roald is peak Roald.
Also, I’m sleep deprived and stoned right now, but Wayne’s gifts has me in an equal mix of happy and sad tears. His gift to Reilly and Jonesy was one of the top five examples of why Wayne has the biggest heart in Letterkenny. So fucking wholesome, bud.

2019.03.27 17:41 Edge767 [PC] The Mother Lickers: Older former military guys with coop-PvE focus, but all civilians of all countries welcome! We also PvP sometimes.

Our clan is called the Mother Lickers. If you’ve seen Old Greg, you know what I’m talking about (and where our sense of humor is).
We are older guys. I think the youngest may be my son who is 24, but I’m 51 and we have a few members older and a few younger. In other games, we are known as the Black Dragon Legion, but that name was taken (and also too long) in TD2, so while going through name after name and being rejected for it being already taken, I jokingly put in Mother Lickers (MLK) and it stuck. So, we have the clan tag MLK which is cool.
We are casual, but lately we’ve been very active in TD2. Our clan has ~8 people in it right now, and we have our own Discord we use while we play. We have players in Sweden and all over the US. We typically group up with each other and help where necessary, but often, we just run around and kill stuff hoping for loot. We didn’t rush through to WT4 (heck, we are still at WT3), but instead took our time and decided to experience the game in groups. It’s been very entertaining, worthwhile, and I have to say, memorable. I’ve had some of the most amazing game experiences with friends in TD2 that still make me smile.
What can you expect if you join the Mother Lickers? Humor. Camaraderie. Sharing of loot (when we are together, of course). Sharing knowledge. Communications in game: many of us are former military (or active, in my case), but we are not rigid in our comms. We say what needs to be said, or sometimes even what doesn’t need to be said (ex: when someone is down, it’s customary for them to say, “‘I’ve got the black lung, pops!” Or when someone is coming to res you, we’ll say, “I got you, boo.” These are references from Zoolander and Letterkenny, respectively). We predominantly coop-PvE, but once we’re geared up and feeling a bit sassy, we will go PvP. Mostly to get loot in the DZ, but sometimes just for the fun of it. It all depends on how we are feeling at the time.
Oh... and we go to the BOO, we may sing it to the channel as, “It’s so cold in the boo...” in the style of “It’s So Cold in the D” by Little’T.
So yes, we’re a little irreverent, a little silly, and a lot about having fun and a good time in a game. We take it seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously. Nobody power trips because there’s no reason/need for that. Besides, we’re all grownups. Ain’t nobody got time fuh dat!
My gamer tag is JarheadEdge. The clan is Mother Lickers (MLK). We’d be happy to have you.

The Canadian Indie Rock Canon #29: Purity Ring - Shrines

Rarely does a band come new onto the indie music scene with such hype as Purity Ring did in 2012. I have vivid memories of blasting this into my ears on the TTC on my way to class, with little to no remorse about the people around me. At the same time, I felt super awkward sharing a record where the second song is about swallowing someone into your rib cage. But I loved it all the same. Due to the popularity and age of the record, I hope I do the band justice with this Canon addition.
Signed to 4AD off the back of 1 track, the duo of Corin Rodick and Megan James from Edmonton, Alberta, began brewing something special. April of 2012 marked their first official release, ‘Obedear’, setting the marquee sound that would make up their first record Shrines. Composed of glass-like synthesizers, janky beats, space creating drums, and emotive and complex lyricism, Shrines stands as a gateway between dance, electronic, hip-hop, indie, and rock. With the concept of internet radio on the forefront of the monumentality it shares today, Shrines lives as a digital earworm that blends enough genres to have something for everyone.
Personal note, this record is tied to a plethora of feelings for me. It exists as this intersection between being alone on a walk home from a night out, and hanging out with my best friends after 2 glasses of wine; it's incredibly comfortable but also carnally driven with its lip smacking lyricism and deep tonal range. The sharp production, mixed with hair raising vocals of the album recall a specific feeling that tends to be more akin to pop music, but Purity Ring walk the fine line that divides the distinction. Without getting sappy, Shrines is truly a landmark piece of music that, when deconstructed, exposes a series of musical webs that branch out from the band’s production.
Beginning with ‘Crawlersout’, the record’s sound does not stray far from ‘Obedear’. The opener is a slow building, synth-based track that caresses the high and low ranges of your ear canal while Megan sings in the mid-range about sea water, rolling hills, buffaloes, dead birds, sweet flesh, and long nails as she explains her ideas of childbirth to the unsuspecting listener. Filled with cavernous and distorted vocals that operate as a drum pattern, the track drones and bangs in intervals that create a vast soundstage. This is a critical theme throughout the project as their music aims to crawl into your brainspace, lingering long after the music has finished.
Track 2 of Shrines, ‘Fineshrine’, is the thesis of the band’s work. It is their most recognized track, and has even gained credit in other media. Most recently, and most Canadian-ly, it was featured in Season 6, Episode 5 of Letterkenny; Jared Keeso’s comedy about small town Ontario. Birthing the namesake of the record itself, Fineshrine is all of the elements that make up the band, packaged into one harrowing love song. Flexible as a club, late night car ride, or picnic-in-Trinity-Bellwoods background song, the track incorporates the same imagery-laden lyrics that have been a hallmark of their music. Opening the song, while also composing the repeated hook, are these four lines:
“Get a little closer, let fold
Cut open my sternum, and pull
My little ribs around you
The rungs of me be under, under you”
Megan avoids the basic tropes of shallow emotive singing by describing the literal embodiment of another person as a way to express deep and precious love for another human being. Rounded out with bright synths, a hip-hop inspired drill beat, and more drum patterns based around vocals, ‘Fineshrine’ swallows you into Purity Ring’s crafted world.
The next track, ‘Ungirthed’, was also the single that got them signed to 4AD. Still owning their tropes, the band utilize the same sonic elements of bright synths and distorted vocals as Megan sings about young witches growing up in a female only world. The songs ‘Amenamy’, ‘Cartographist’, ‘Belispeak’, and ‘Saltkin’ operates in the same vein, with slight changes in song composition and drastically vivid lyricism. Certain concepts of magic, cults, and emotional attachment are referenced through these pieces, adding to the overall tone and composition of the record. ‘Grandloves’ is the only track on the record with a feature, Young Magic (an experimental soul band consisting of Melati Malay and Isaac Emmanuel), which introduces a male vocalist to the equation. Sampled from their song, ‘You with Air’, the sharp tongued delivery of the the duo adds a refreshing shade to the record that is unexpected upon first listen.
The next two songs, lead single ‘Obedear’ and ‘Lofticries’ are two of the band’s most popular tracks. ‘Obedear’, a play on the words ‘Oh but dear,’ is composed with a very bright synth tune that repeats and runs for the almost the entire track. Aided with sparse drums and claps, Megan’s voice takes centrestage. Filled with a breakdown halfway through, the lyricism and heavily distorted vocal performance is one of the best in the band’s catalog.
“Oh but dear the sky is low watch
Fluent sea men rig their rudders so they'll
Graze it with their wind arrows
'Tis in the fathoms that-that they brush below-low”
‘Lofticries’ is the most dense song on the record as there is a constant drone, drum, and vocal addition that aides in the sonic composition. Where most songs on the record are given space to breathe, this track is almost overwhelming when broken down into individual components. Until the break at 3 minutes, there is almost no empty space on the track. This is not a negative, this is a moment in the record where the vulnerability of James’ voice is taken from us, allowing us to be immersed in a world where the soundstage is blurred. If I had to guess, Lofticries would probably be one of the main reasons why Purity Ring was hired by Danny Brown on his track 25 Bucks.
The record ends with Shuck, a very slow and sparse track that is composed around Megan’s voice, droning vocals, and a clapping drum pattern that is evocative of a chanting chorus. Running 2 minutes in length, and fading out into emptiness, the open aired song is a beautiful denouement at the end of a very sonically rich record.
All in all, I had a bunch of fun listening to this record while I rehashed my feelings from 2012. It is an internet radio album that was built just prior to its mass popularity, helping set the stage for what would be a clash of electronic and hip-hop crossover that still exists into the present day. Shrines is a genre bending Canadian composition that lacked very few contemporaries, but has left behind a monumental amount of ingenuity and praise.

Hey /Vancouver,
Today the 51st Superbowl is being played by the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. No matter what your opinion is on American Football, Superbowl is a yearly spectacular that produces specials, epic commercials, A football game, and food deals. If you’re interested in watching the game, Kickoff is at 3:30pm.

Phew, I think I’m done. That took forever. I don’t normally watch American Football, hell I haven’t even played Madden. But I do enjoy big games. Go Falcons (Unless Patriots win, then well I was always cheering for them*.)
